Mass Spectrometer

The Mass Spectrometer (MS) is a multiblock introduced in v1.3-beta of QMD. Its purpose is to split various minerals, chemicals and compounds into their components. It also doubles up as a x4 ore processing multiblock.

Construction

The MS is constructed by making a frame of Accelerator Casing blocks that is exactly 7 blocks tall and 7 blocks wide. The length has to be a minimum of 5 blocks, but it can be more, to allow for faster processing. In this wiki page, we'll be building a minimum size MS (ie. 5 long, 7 wide and 7 tall).

Afterwards, a 5x5 ring of BSCCO Magnets is placed inside the multiblock, with a 3x3 core of Accelerator Electromagnet Yoke blocks, then a 5x5 square of Accelerator Beam Blocks, and then another BSCCO Magnet and Yoke structure. The multiblock should now look like this:

Then we need to place ion sources and ion collectors. One Laser Ion Source block is required for every beam block structure in the MS, placed on the bottom block and then four Ion Collector blocks must be placed above the source, as seen in the image below:

Lastly, place the controller, energy port and coolant vents anywhere in the casing, just like with other Accelerator-type multiblocks, and fill the rest of the casing with glass or casing blocks.

The MS can be expanded to allow for faster processing, this is done by adding another beam square and BSCCO magnet structure. Every "sandwich" of BSCCO rings with a beam square in the middle, increases processing speed linearly (2 sandwiches = 2x faster, 7 sandwiches = 7x faster, etc). Image below shows an MS with 3 sandwiches, ie. 3x faster processing vs minimum size.

Operation

The MS takes in items or fluids to be split, through the Laser Ion Source block, and the components can be retrieved via the Ion Collector blocks. Feed it energy and coolant to prevent explosions!
