[query] Make StackFrame helpers lazy and replace the More node - #15929
StackFrame swaps its one mutable node for four immutable ones. run keeps pending steps on a List.
StackFrame
Done(result)
Thunk(force)
- More(next, contHead, contTail) // mutable, with a ContCell queue+ FlatMapped(source, f)+ Mapped(source, f)
The helpers (mapRecur, foreachRecur, collectRecur, fillArray) no longer run f while they build the frame. Before, a walker built its first child's frame before it returned its own, so a long first-child chain overflowed the JVM stack.
mapRecur(s, f)
- loop = f(s(i)).flatMap(cont) // runs f(s(0)) now+ step = call(f(s(i)).flatMap(k)) // runs f when run forces step+ k = b => add b; i += 1; if more then step else done(result)
When f returns Done, flatMap calls k at once and k returns step. That element allocates nothing.
Since the helpers no longer run f, callers don't need call around them:
mapChildrenWithIndexStackSafe and the invariant walker drop call the same way. RewriteBottomUp drops its trailing yield, which allocated a Done per node. The StackSafe API is unchanged.
Benchmarks
Two new JMH benchmarks, run with -prof gc and @Fork(1):
IRPassBenchmark times four passes on four IR shapes: lets (3000 chained Block bindings), deep (2000 nested StreamMaps), tree (16383 Add nodes) and wide (a 1000-field MakeStruct).
StackFrameBenchmark rebuilds a 4096-leaf tree with mapRecur and with plain recursion, at 2, 8 and 64 children per node.
Change from 722f6ce to this PR, as time / bytes allocated per op:

What the numbers mean:
normalizeNames on deep overflowed before and now passes. That's the lazy helpers.
rewriteBottomUp gains most because every node goes through mapChildrenStackSafe, which lost its call. Leaves now take the Done path.
typeCheck allocates 13–18% less from dropping call in check. lets doesn't move because its 2.6 GB per op comes from outside StackFrame.
forwardLets on deep still overflows, in ComputeUsesAndDefs. That's plain recursion, not StackFrame, so this PR leaves it.
StackFrameBenchmark isn't like-for-like. The old walk wrapped each child in call and the new one doesn't.
With one fork, read anything within ±10% as noise. plain doesn't touch StackFrame and moved from 21 to 12 µs between earlier runs.

Walkthrough
The PR replaces the StackFrame continuation-chain trampoline with an explicit-stack interpreter, updates recursive helpers and IR traversal call sites, and adds JMH benchmarks for IR passes and tree traversal.
Changes: Stack-safe traversal
Layer / File(s)
Summary
StackFrame interpreter and recursive helpers hail/hail/utils/src/is/hail/utils/StackSafe.scala
StackSafe.run interprets frame types with an explicit stack. StackFrame combinators and recursive collection helpers now use mapped, flat-mapped, and reusable step frames.
IR traversal call sites hail/hail/src/is/hail/expr/ir/BaseIR.scala, hail/hail/src/is/hail/expr/ir/TypeCheck.scala, hail/hail/src/is/hail/expr/ir/lowering/RewriteBottomUp.scala, hail/hail/src/is/hail/expr/ir/lowering/invariant/package.scala
IR child mapping, type checking, and invariant verification invoke recursive traversals directly. RewriteBottomUp uses flatMap and explicit pattern matching while retaining its described rule behavior.
The traversal changes appear mergeable with bounded follow-up: add a deep-chain regression test and correct the benchmark description. Whether the deep ForwardLets benchmark overflows remains unconfirmed.

Explanation
The title "[query] Make StackFrame helpers lazy and replace the More node" matches the main change. The PR replaces the mutable More node with immutable Done, Thunk, FlatMapped, and Mapped nodes, and makes the StackFrame helpers (mapRecur, foreachRecur, collectRecur, fillArray) defer calling f until run forces each step. The title omits the secondary removals of redundant call wrappers and the new benchmarks, which is expected for a short title.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template's main content. It gives a summary of the change, justification, benchmark results, and known limitations. It does not include the required Change Description issue reference line (the PR notes it is based on #15924 but no 'Fixes #' line is present, which is acceptable for a stacked PR). The Security Assessment section is missing entirely: no impact rating is selected, no impact description is given, and the Appsec Review checkbox is absent. Because the template marks these sections as required when the change potentially impacts the deployed Hail Batch instance, the description is incomplete.
Resolution
Add the Security Assessment section from the template. Select one of the two deployment-impact options. If the change potentially impacts the Hail Batch instance, select an Impact Rating, write an Impact Description with mitigations, and complete the Appsec Review checkbox. If it cannot impact the instance, delete the Impact Rating, Impact Description, and Appsec Review sections. Optionally add a 'Fixes #' line, or delete it if no issue applies.

Correct the Add-node count in the tree description.
The tree shape builds 8191 Add nodes and 8192 leaves, for 16383 nodes in total. The doc comment says it has 16383 Add nodes, which overstates the Add count by about 2x. Change the description to state both counts.

Update the `tree` description in the benchmark doc comment to state that it

Add a regression test for a deep first-child chain through mapRecur.
No test runs a deep first-child chain through the StackSafe helpers. The existing IR tests use wide nodes, and the deep-nesting benchmark is a JMH benchmark, not a test. If mapRecur evaluated f eagerly again, the current suite would still pass.
Add a test in a new suite for StackSafe. Nest mapRecur about 10,000 levels deep, then run the result. Wrap it in the test annotation that the repository's suites use:
Under eager evaluation, this recursion can grow the JVM stack once per level, so the test can fail with StackOverflowError.

Review comment at @hail/hail/utils/src/is/hail/utils/StackSafe.scala at line 74:
Add a StackSafe test suite with a regression test that builds a roughly
10,000-level first-child chain using mapRecur and runs the resulting StackFrame,
asserting the expected value without overflowing the JVM stack. Use the test
annotation and conventions established by the repository’s existing suites.
Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The benchmark invokes ForwardLets on every shape, including the 2000-level deep shape, although the PR description reports that ForwardLets still overflows in ComputeUsesAndDefs.
That benchmark may throw StackOverflowError instead of producing a measurement, preventing a complete run of the configured cases.
This can occur when: JMH runs forwardLets with shape set to deep.

StackFrame had one mutable node, More, that held a queue of
continuations. It now has four immutable nodes: Done, Thunk, FlatMapped
and Mapped. run keeps pending FlatMapped and Mapped nodes on a List and
applies a run of Mapped nodes in one loop.
mapRecur, foreachRecur, collectRecur and fillArray used to call f on the
first element while they built the frame. So a walker built its first
child's frame before it returned its own, and a long first-child chain
overflowed the JVM stack. Each helper now builds one
step = call(f(next).flatMap(k)) and returns it. run forces step once per
element. When f returns Done, flatMap calls k at once and k returns
step, so that element allocates nothing.
The helpers no longer run f, so callers don't need to wrap them in call.
This drops call from mapChildrenStackSafe, mapChildrenWithIndexStackSafe,
TypeCheck.check and the invariant walker. RewriteBottomUp drops its
trailing yield, which allocated a Done per node.
This adds two JMH benchmarks. IRPassBenchmark times NormalizeNames,
TypeCheck, ForwardLets and RewriteBottomUp on four IR shapes.
StackFrameBenchmark compares mapRecur with plain recursion.
The StackSafe API is unchanged.
