Welcome to the Amarant wiki!
What exactly is Amarant, you ask?
In theory, Amarant is a unix based operating system designed to be efficient for both mobile and desktop environments.
It is being designed with several key goals in mind:
-
Old/slow software should be replaced and or omitted
X worked fine for years, but it is much too bloated and complicated for what we need. -
Speed is important
There is not reason my phone should take longer to boot than my laptop. That said, neither should take more than 10 seconds to power up. -
The OS should use as little of the disk as necessary
Why does my desktop OS take up 8GB on my hard drive? This is simply unacceptable, especially considering how much of that space is used by legacy code that I can’t use
But wait, it’s not available yet
The software described is still being planned, written and compiled. There is only a select group of individuals onboard right now and only so much we can get done. If you’d like to contribute We would appreciate any contributions you may have.
Current status
As of right now, I have been researching different kernels with support for ARM and x86 platforms, with PowerPC and MIPS as bonuses if available. The preferred kernel would have good POSIX compatibility(or planned compatibility) as well as an easy to use object oriented API. We are currently interested in implementing Mach/L4 as the kernel for amarant.
