Proposed changes in this pull request

Fixes wso2/product-is#28292.

  • Recursively normalize JSON Schema keywords that require non-negative integer values before creating the Vert.x JsonObject: minItems, maxItems, minLength, maxLength, minProperties, maxProperties, minContains, and maxContains.
  • Convert only mathematically integral, non-negative numeric values within the Java Integer range.
  • Preserve fractional, negative, out-of-range, and unrelated numeric values so normal schema validation can reject them.
  • Deep-copy nested maps and collections so caller-owned schemas are not mutated.
  • Preserve the existing additionalProperties=false behavior.
  • Add regression coverage for normalization, nested schemas, boundary and invalid values, caller-map immutability, keyword-named properties, and constraint enforcement including maxContains.

Verification

  • Red state: with the new minContains and maxContains cases but without their production normalization, the focused suite failed with Double cannot be cast to Integer.
  • Focused AuthorizationDetailsSchemaValidatorTest: 13 tests passed.
  • Full RAR TestNG suite: 45 tests passed.
  • Affected RAR package build: passed with tests, Checkstyle, and JaCoCo skipped after those gates were exercised separately.
  • git diff --check: passed.
  • The unskipped Maven command remains blocked by an unrelated existing Checkstyle finding in the unchanged TestDAOUtils.java:77.

  • Are all necessary strings marked for translation? No user-facing strings are introduced.

Tests

  • Are there sufficient test cases? Focused validator coverage is included.
  • If this is a bug fix, are tests for the issue in place? The regression cases fail with the original implementation and pass with this fix.

  • Are all external inputs validated and sanitized appropriately? Invalid schema keyword values remain available to normal schema validation.
  • Does all branching logic have a default case? Unsupported values are preserved unchanged.
  • Does this solution handle outliers and edge cases gracefully? Fractional, negative, non-finite, and out-of-range values are covered.
  • Are all external communications secured and restricted to SSL? No external communication is introduced.

  • Are changes to the API documented in the API docs? No API contract changes.
  • Are reusable components documented? No reusable component is introduced.

Normalize integer-valued schema keywords before creating the Vert.x
JsonObject used for RAR authorization details schema validation.

This avoids ClassCastException failures when JSON schema numeric keywords
such as minItems, maxItems, minLength, and maxLength are represented as
integral Double values. The normalization is recursive, preserves the
caller-owned schema map, and only converts non-negative integer-range
values for supported schema-size keywords.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Map-based authorization schema validation now recursively copies schemas and normalizes eligible numeric values for non-negative integer keywords. Tests cover integral Double values, nested schemas, boundary values, constraint violations, and caller-owned schema preservation.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — For the identified production path, the behavioral change is bounded to validation of authorization details against an authorized type's schema; no new request-controlled schema selection was found.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Request-provided authorization details cross the schema-validation boundary only after the caller checks that their type is authorized; normalization operates on the selected schema, and validation still rejects unknown fields.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Regression tests exercise normalized constraints that reject noncompliant details and verify that normalization does not change the caller-owned schema.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.

The schema normalizer selected values for integer conversion by key name
alone. When an authorization detail property was itself named after one of
the six supported keywords, its subschema was handed to the numeric
converter, returned unchanged and never recursed into. Nested minItems and
maxItems values therefore stayed as Double and validation still failed with
the ClassCastException reported in wso2/product-is#28292.

Gate the keyword conversion on the value actually being a Number so map and
collection values continue through the recursive paths.

Add regression coverage for keyword named properties, boundary values,
keywords nested inside schema lists, caller owned map immutability and
unrelated numeric keywords that must never be converted.

Cover the remaining normalization branches.

The tests do not exercise minProperties or maxProperties when their values are Double.

The tests also do not exercise fractional, negative, and values greater than Integer.MAX_VALUE for supported keywords.

Add property-count cases and guard-value cases. Verify that the validator does not convert unsupported values or throw ClassCastException.

Hi @sadilchamishka, could you take a look at this one when you have a moment?

This PR has no workflow runs — the only statuses are the CLA check and CodeRabbit, so the build and tests have never actually executed. Could you approve the workflow runs for it?

It addresses wso2/product-is#28292 by normalizing the integer-valued JSON Schema keywords (minItems, maxItems, minLength, maxLength, minProperties, maxProperties) before the schema is handed to the Vert.x validator, which resolves the ClassCastException: Double cannot be cast to Integer. Normalization is recursive, only converts integral non-negative values within the Integer range, and leaves the caller-owned schema map untouched.

Happy to make any changes you'd like.

It seems the list misses minContains and maxContains. A schema using contains with either one may still crash. shall we check that too?

Vert.x 4.5.25 reads both minContains and maxContains through JsonObject#getInteger, and the new regression case reproduced the same Double cannot be cast to Integer failure. I added both keywords to the normalization set and covered successful normalization, caller-map immutability, and maxContains enforcement in eb54bc8. The focused validator suite now passes all 13 tests, and the full RAR suite passes all 45 tests.

@pavinduLakshan The minContains/maxContains review feedback is addressed in eb54bc8, with red-to-green regression coverage and the full RAR suite passing locally. The PR Builder run for the new head is currently awaiting maintainer approval; could you approve it when convenient?

Thanks for the contribution! Closing this since the issue (wso2/product-is#28292) is being addressed at the framework level in wso2/carbon-identity-framework#8324, which parses authorization details type schemas loaded for RAR validation with integral numbers preserved as integers. That fixes the Double cannot be cast to Integer failure at the source for all integer keywords, without needing normalization in the validator.
