Ian Auty edited this page May 11, 2020 · 1 revision

The Sony IMX477 is a new 12.3 megapixel high quality camera module released for the Raspberry Pi in April 2020. It features an adjustable back focus and support for C- and CS-mount lenses, providing a maximum 4056x3040 resolution and connects to the Raspberry Pi via the CSI2 bus using a ribbon cable.

The IMX477 camera module allows the Raspberry Pi to be used in scenarios where image quality is important.

Below you can see a full breakdown of the resolutions and attributes that this camera supports at various sensor modes:

Mode Resolution Aspect Ratio Framerate FoV Binning
1 1920x1080 16:9 0.1 - 30 Partial 2x2
2 2028x1520 4:3 0.1 - 50 Full 2x2
3 4056x3040 4:3 0.005 - 10 Full None
4 1012x760 4:3 50.1 - 120 Full 4x4

Note: It is important to note that the above list are not the only possible resolutions available when taking pictures on the Raspberry Pi - they are a set of resolutions the sensor can directly output to the Pi's GPU. The VideoCore IV GPU ISP (Image Sensor Pipeline) itself is then able to resize to the desired resolution.

Modes which support Full FoV (Field of View) will make use of the full 4056x3040 pixels available on the sensor, whereas the Partial FoV will capture from the center of the sensor.

The camera is suitable to a number of applications including: General purpose photography, bird watching, CCTV, and astronomy.
