@samueltardieu I tried to minimize churn - reducing the changes. I just pushed the new commit making all tests a bit more consistent, where every test now has a different error line - making it much harder to review. |

Don't worry about the line number changes, we're very used to scrolling past them |
This lint was downgraded to `pedantic` in part because rust-analyzer was not fully supporting it at the time per rust-lang#10087. The support has been added over [a year ago](rust-lang/rust-analyzer#11260), so seems like this should be back to style. Another source of the initial frustration was fixed since then as well - this lint does not trigger by default in case only some arguments can be inlined.

Starting with Rust 1.88.0 (expected 2025-06-26) [1], `rustc` may move
back the `uninlined_format_args` to `style` from `pedantic` (it was
there waiting for rust-analyzer suppotr), and thus we will start to see
lints like:
warning: variables can be used directly in the `format!` string
--> rust/macros/kunit.rs:105:37
|
105 | let kunit_wrapper_fn_name = format!("kunit_rust_wrapper_{}", test);
| ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
|
= help: for further information visit https://rust-lang.github.io/rust-clippy/master/index.html#uninlined_format_args
help: change this to
|
105 - let kunit_wrapper_fn_name = format!("kunit_rust_wrapper_{}", test);
105 + let kunit_wrapper_fn_name = format!("kunit_rust_wrapper_{test}");
There is even a case that is a pure removal:
warning: variables can be used directly in the `format!` string
--> rust/macros/module.rs:51:13
|
51 | format!("{field}={content}\0", field = field, content = content)
| ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

help: change this to
|
51 - format!("{field}={content}\0", field = field, content = content)
51 + format!("{field}={content}\0")
The lints all seem like nice cleanups, thus just apply them.
We may want to disable `allow-mixed-uninlined-format-args` in the future.
Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org # Needed in 6.12.y and later (Rust is pinned in older LTSs).

The `uninlined_format_args` lint was moved from the `pedantic` group to the `style` group of lints, see rust-lang/rust-clippy#14160. As the `clippy::all` group does not include the pedantic group, warnings were emitted for the generated Cap'n Proto code. To disable all warnings currently raised both clippy allow attributes are now required.

This lint is very annoying for a bunch of people. A lot of people prefer the Is there any chance this could get moved back to For example, I definitely do not want the lint here: fn examine_report(error: impl miette::Diagnostic + Sync + Send + 'static) {
println!("{}", error);
println!("{:?}", error);
println!("{:?}", error.source());
println!("{}", error.code().unwrap());
// Convert to report
let report: miette::Report = error.into();
println!("{}", report);
println!("{:?}", report);
// Convert to std::error::Error
let boxed_error: BoxedError = report.into();
println!("{}", boxed_error);
println!("{:?}", boxed_error);

Starting with Rust 1.88.0 (expected 2025-06-26) [1], `rustc` may move
back the `uninlined_format_args` to `style` from `pedantic` (it was
there waiting for rust-analyzer suppotr), and thus we will start to see
lints like:

help: change this to
|
51 - format!("{field}={content}\0", field = field, content = content)
51 + format!("{field}={content}\0")
The lints all seem like nice cleanups, thus just apply them.
We may want to disable `allow-mixed-uninlined-format-args` in the future.

The
uninlined_format_argswas temporarily downgraded topedanticin part because rust-analyzer was not fully supporting it at the time, per #10087. The support has been added over a year ago, so seems like this should be back to style.Another source of the initial frustration was fixed since then as well - this lint does not trigger by default in case only some arguments can be inlined.

uninlined_format_args]: move back tostyle
