I am a researcher working on causal explanation, attribution, and counterfactual reasoning under uncertainty, and on the formal and statistical foundations of probabilistic legal reasoning. My work sits on the line between formal methods — logic, probability, structural causal models — and applied probabilistic modeling, with a particular emphasis on spatio-temporal causal models for decision-relevant problems.
I hold a PhD in Logic and Philosophy of Mathematics from the University of Calgary, and have held positions at the Research Foundation Flanders, Trinity College Dublin, the University of Bristol, and the University of Gdansk.
- Spatio-temporal causal modeling. Causal Bayesian models with deep machine-learned components for spatio-temporal valuation problems, dynamical models of policy interventions, and causal models of group foraging behavior in animals. The shared question across these is how to make causal explanation tractable when the system is high-dimensional, dynamical, and only partly observed.
- PCI (Probabilistic Causal Impact). A tractable causal attribution method that decomposes explanations into separate necessity and sufficiency components instead of collapsing them. PCI bridges Halpern–Pearl actual causality with scalable attribution machinery — SHAP, LIME, gradient-based methods — by re-casting explanation as estimation on an expanded probabilistic structural causal model.
- Probability on Trial. Book-length project on probabilistic legal reasoning, with chapters on burden of proof, conjunction, likelihood ratio, weight, and higher-order legal probabilism. Active papers cover imprecise probability, awareness growth and unanticipated possibilities, forensic evidence evaluation, case narrations, and gaps in evidence.
- NLP and online aggression. Bayesian uncertainty in word-embedding bias estimation, and large-scale empirical evaluation of AI-assisted counter-speech interventions against personal attacks online.
