Jenkins on Windows
Objective: The objective of this assignment is to enable to set up Jenkins for CI/CT on a Windows operating system and apply their knowledge to a real-world industrial example. By completing this assignment, students will gain hands-on experience in configuring Jenkins, creating a CI/CT pipeline, and addressing challenges faced in an industrial context.
Prerequisites:
- Access to a Windows machine (physical or virtual).
- Basic knowledge of Git and a version-controlled sample project.
Task: Task 1: Install Jenkins on Windows 1.1. Download and install Jenkins on your Windows machine by following the official Jenkins installation guide for Windows.
1.2. Start the Jenkins service and access the Jenkins web interface.
Task 2: Configure Jenkins for Industrial Example on Windows 2.1. Industrial Context:
- Assume you are working in a software development team for an e-commerce platform.
- Your team is responsible for developing, testing, and deploying new features to the platform regularly.
2.2. Scenario:
- The industrial example involves automating the CI/CT pipeline for the checkout module of the e-commerce platform.
Task 3: Create Jenkins Job for Checkout Module on Windows 3.1. Create a new Jenkins job named "Checkout_Module_CI_Windows."
- Configure Git as the source code management system with the repository URL for the checkout module.
3.2. Set up a basic build step to compile the checkout module.
- Choose build tools suitable for Windows, such as MSBuild or Visual Studio Build Tools.
3.3. Add a post-build action to archive the compiled artifacts.
Task 4: Implement Testing in the CI/CT Pipeline on Windows 4.1. Enhance the Jenkins job to include testing steps.
- Use a testing framework suitable for the chosen programming language and compatible with Windows (e.g., NUnit for .NET languages).
4.2. Add test execution commands in the Jenkins job to run unit tests for the checkout module.
Task 5: Integrate Deployment in the Pipeline on Windows 5.1. Extend the CI/CT pipeline to include a deployment step.
- Simulate a deployment by copying the artifacts to a designated location on the Windows machine.
Task 6: Document the CI/CT Pipeline on Windows 6.1. Document the steps involved in the CI/CT pipeline on Windows, including screenshots of Jenkins configurations and the Jenkins job.
6.2. Provide a brief explanation of the purpose of each stage in the pipeline (e.g., build, test, deploy).
Task 7: Reflection on Industrial Example on Windows 7.1. Reflect on how the CI/CT pipeline configured for the checkout module aligns with industry best practices on a Windows environment.
7.2. Discuss potential challenges faced on Windows and propose solutions.
