this un-reverts the reversion of PR #308 which was mistakenly merged.

nope nope, totally my fault on that one. dunno what i was thinking.
feel free to use this or make a new one as you like

i would like to see the changes get in there to make sample transfer possible. (even before full featured BEES additions.) but in all honesty i have very little time to test anything. and yet i have merge powers on this repo. thus, i hope that some development, testing, PRing can happen off of my watch... and lmk if something needs to happen.

I think I got this to work now, will try to make a pr to the sample-transfer branch.
