How can I check which version of the app I am using?

You can check the version at the very bottom of the preferences page. It should look similar to 2.8.4

Why does my app not update to a new version?

The app is cached on your device to save data. This means if a new version is available, the app will show you the older one first (because it is much faster) and prepares the new one in the background for next time.

TL;DR: Reloading the app twice ensures you have the newest version.
