How It Works

Skill Discovery

All skill names and descriptions are always in the agent's context via copilot-instructions.md. When a task matches a skill, the agent loads the full SKILL.md — this is called progressive disclosure. The agent only loads what's relevant, keeping context lean.

Task Tracking (.github/tasks/)

File Purpose Lifecycle
lessons.md Persistent memory of past mistakes and rules Commit it. Never delete. Grows over time.
todo.md Plan + step tracker for the current session Reset at start of each new task
session.md Real-time work log and decision record Reset at start of each new session

The agent reads lessons.md at the start of complex tasks to avoid repeating mistakes from previous sessions.

Root Instructions (copilot-instructions.md)

Inspired by Boris Cherny's CLAUDE.md, the root file enforces:

  • Plan before execute — spec before code for any non-trivial task
  • Verification before done — prove it works, don't just assert it
  • Self-improvement loop — capture lessons from every correction
  • Confirmation before irreversible actions — always ask before push, delete, deploy

Pushing to GitHub (First Time Setup)

Step 1 — Extract the zip

Extract james-skills.zip anywhere on your machine. You'll get a james-skills/ folder.

Step 2 — Initialize the repo

cd james-skills
git init
git add .
git commit -m "feat: initial commit — 37 dev skills for Copilot Agents and Claude"

Step 3 — Create the repo on GitHub

Go to github.com/new and fill in:

  • Repository name: dev-skills
  • Description: A modular AI skill library for software engineers — 37 SKILL.md files covering technical, soft, and career skills for GitHub Copilot Agents, Claude, and Claude Code.
  • Visibility: Public
  • Do NOT initialize with README, .gitignore, or license (you already have your files)

Click Create repository.

Step 4 — Connect and push

Step 5 — Add topics

On your repo page, click the ⚙️ gear icon next to About and add these topics:

Installation

Option 1: Drop into an existing project

# Clone or download this repo, then copy .github/ into your project root
cp -r .github/ /path/to/your/project/

Option 2: Clone and use as template

cd your-project
cp -r dev-skills/.github .

Option 3: Git submodule

After installing, GitHub Copilot Agents will automatically detect .github/copilot-instructions.md and load skills on demand.

Edit .github/copilot-instructions.md to match your team's stack, conventions, and preferred communication style.

Track lessons across sessions

When your AI makes a mistake, ask it to append to .github/tasks/lessons.md. Over time this builds a project-specific memory of what goes wrong and how to prevent it.
