Probably this is not really an issue for here (likely just for harmonization), but just noting it down, as it may become relevant for harmonization:
For CEDS 2D sectors, Steve commented on 21 Oct 2024:
"For VOCs we can do solvents as written, for other emissions probably allocate to industry. (the spatial mapping would be closer to industry for those other emissions)"
Jarmo responded on 27 Oct:
"Okay - so just to confirm: you propose a change here in methodology from CMIP6, correct?"
"Just to clarify; what we are harmonizing here is the IAM variable "Emissions|*Product Use" (Solvents is only expected component).
Would we:
still do regional timeseries as the 2D total, for all gases,
then patternscaling to spatial patterns split by VOC / other?
Or are you also proposing to move the non-VOC to the Industrial Sector regional timeseries for harmonization?"
To summarise:
CEDS will have theses species for Solvents: "VOC"
IAMs (in the current data) have, for Product Use|Solvents, these species: "VOC" (AIM, MESSAGE, REMIND) but also some non-zero values for "BC" (REMIND), "CO" (REMIND), "CO2" (AIM, REMIND), "N2O" (AIM), "NH3" (REMIND), "NOx" (REMIND), Sulfur (REMIND)
If we want to be correct, we need to:
(a) ask the modelling teams whether they really model these
(b) in the harmonization, put non-VOC IAM emissions for Solvents under Industrial Sector, not under Solvents, to align with CEDS.
