I had claude walk through this with me and we came up with some extra tests:
The last one reveals that Extract has the same bug as this pr: bindInitArgRefs only flags Block-bound names, so an init arg reading a non-Block binder slips through. TableAggregate(TableRange(5, 2), ToArray(mapIR(rangeIR(3))(i => ApplyAggOp(Take(), i)(row.idx)))) passes TypeCheck and then fails in NormalizeNames with "found free variable in normalize". Should this be rejected here, the way LiftEnv's None entries do in the lifters, or left for a follow-up?

Overall, nothing's super blocking, I could easily approve this, up to you how much more work you really want to do.

LiftEnv is a deny-list: hoist ignores any free variable missing from the env and treats it as safe to read at the hoist target. That fails open. Within this PR the list has already been extended twice after the fact: va in the agg scope on rows, and n_rows on cols, both in eafb460.
The names that are actually legal at the hoist target form a small, fixed set: global, plus n_cols on rows (because Extract moves its Block binding into the init bindings). Everything else that newRow/newCol can see is in Bindings.get(MatrixMapRows/MatrixMapCols, 1). Two ways to flip the default:
-
Minimal: at each lifter, assert that the names in
Bindings.get(node, 1)equalillegal ++ allowed. A binding added inBinds.scalawould then break lowering loudly instead of being hoisted silently. -
Full: give
LiftEnva third state (Invariant,Hoist(v),Varying). Seed it fromBindings.get(node, 1), with everything outside the allowed set mapped toVarying, and make a lookup miss inhoistan internal error:env.eval.lookupOption(n) match { case Some(Invariant) => case Some(Hoist(v)) => // as today case Some(Varying) => fatal(s"... refers to $n, which can't leave newRow") case None => throw new AssertionError(s"free variable $n missing from LiftEnv") }
This comment ain't really mine, but it seems reasonable to share.

newRow/newColumn have no free variables - TypeCheck has already proven this.

Extract moves Block bindings that an init op arg reads into initBindings, but it marked only the arg's direct free variables. In `n = 3 - 1; m = n - 1; Take(m)`, `m` moved and `n` stayed in the post-agg Let, leaving `n` free in the init op. Mark the free variables of each moved binding's value too, walking a Block's bindings in reverse so marks from later bindings are final. initBindings also came out in the wrong order for nested Lets: an inner Block appended its moved bindings before the outer Block appended the ones they read. Each Block now collects its children's moved bindings and appends them after its own. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
MatrixMapRows' liftScans and MatrixMapCols' lift move scan and agg ops out of the new row/col and bind their init args outside. They now track Block EVAL bindings in a LiftEnv, so: - SCAN Block bindings are rebound in the scan scope; - init args may read bindings from the new row/col, which are moved (scans) or copied (aggs) ahead of the lifted op, with transitive deps; - init args that read the row/col, a lifted op's result, or another varying value are rejected with an error. Aggs inside scans, and scans inside aggs, are rejected with an error rather than lowered incorrectly. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Per Bindings.get, a Block's SCAN binding value keeps the agg scope, and an AGG binding value keeps the scan scope. ContainsAgg returned false for SCAN bindings without looking at their values, and ContainsScan likewise for AGG bindings, so `scanlet x = agg.count() in scan.sum(x)` on MatrixMapRows passed LowerMatrixIR's "aggregations inside scans" check and failed later with an EmittableIR invariant error. Both now recurse into every non-AGG (non-SCAN) binding value. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
`assert(a == b)` fails with a bare "assertion failed"; `assertEq` prints both values. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Two cases reached the scan init-arg hoisting in liftScans and produced invalid lowered IR: - An EVAL binding whose value contains an agg, read by a scan init arg, as in `n = agg.count(); scan.take(n)(...)`. emit's ContainsAgg check saw only `Ref(n)`, and hoist moved the agg outside the per-row StreamAgg. hoist now rejects a dependency whose value contains an agg; its recursion covers transitive dependencies. - A scan inside an agg whose init arg reads the agg scope's col or entry, as in `agg.sum(scan.take(col.col_idx)(...).length)`. LiftEnv seeded the agg scope empty, so hoist treated `col` as invariant and left it unbound. The agg scope's col and entry are now seeded as varying. Scans inside aggs that don't read the agg scope, such as `agg.sum(scan.count())`, are unaffected; add value tests for them. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
- TypeCheck rejects ApplyAggOp (ApplyScanOp) outside an agg (scan) scope. An op with no arguments, such as `agg.count()` as another agg's init arg, passed because nothing under it looked up the scope. Interpret now typechecks its input, as the backends' execute already does. - An agg AggFold's combOp and ArrayMaximalIndependentSet's tie-breaker drop eval because they are compiled without outer values, but they kept the scan scope. A scan op there passed TypeCheck, and LowerMatrixIR lifted it out, leaving an unbound Ref. Both children now drop the agg and scan scopes too. - MatrixMapRows: LiftEnv marks the row as varying in the agg scope, so a scan init arg inside an agg seq arg can't read it, as in `agg.sum(scan.take(va.row_idx)(...).length)`. The ContainsAgg check moves from emit into hoist, which covers both the emitted scan and the EVAL bindings its init args read. - MatrixMapCols: no init arg may read `n_rows`. It comes out of the row aggregation that agg init args initialise; scans are banned too to keep the rule simple. - Block binding values take their env from `promoteScope` instead of `Bindings.get` on the Block, which is quadratic. The StreamAgg and StreamAggScan stream child takes its env from `Bindings.get` like every other child. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- `knownLength` took `Bindings.empty`, so it kept the APE's own agg (scan) scope. `Extract` passes it to the `InitOp` as an init arg without extracting it, so an agg op in an agg APE's `knownLength` passed `TypeCheck` and reached the `InitOp` unextracted; likewise a scan in a scan APE's. It now drops the same-kind scope, like the `AggFold` zero and `ApplyAggOp`'s init args, and keeps eval. - Children that drop eval build their `Bindings` with `inFreshScope`. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- An init arg could read an EVAL binding holding a same-kind result, as in `n = agg.count(); agg.take(x, n)`. `Extract` moved the binding into `initBindings`, where it read `Ref(result)` before any result existed and failed with an NPE or a type assertion. This affected TableAggregate, TableMapRows and aggs on MatrixMapRows. `Extract` now rejects it, before `bindInitArgRefs` reads the binding's free variables. MatrixMapCols, and scans on MatrixMapRows, already reject it through `hoist`'s `lifted` set. - `Extract`'s seq IR ends in `Void()`. An unoptimized MatrixMapRows with aggs but no scans left its SCAN `global` and `row` bindings last, failing `Let.void`'s assertion. - The tests cover a direct read, a transitive one, one through an APE's result, `knownLength` and an `AggFold` zero, on tables, rows and cols. - Extract's `bindInitArgRefs` only tracked Block EVAL bindings. An init arg that read a name from any other binder, such as a StreamMap element or an AggArrayPerElement index, passed TypeCheck and Extract, then failed in NormalizeNames with "found free variable in normalize". Extract now binds those names as varying and rejects the read. - Init args that read a same-kind result are caught the same way: `result`, an APE's local result and an AggGroupBy's value are bound as illegal. This replaces the `Exists.inIR` check on moved bindings. - Extract built result refs as `Ref(result, null)` and set their type later in `adjust`. `FreeVariables` gets binding types from `Bindings.get`, so a binding whose value held such a ref failed the assertion in `IR.typ`. Each result ref now has a tuple type with only its own field, so every type inferred above it is correct. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

I also have had a thread going with claude. You already fixed some of the things it found, but there are a few left that seem good to fix. Up to you which of these to take, but hopefully these are easy things for an agent to add. (The rest is claude, but I did go through them and pick out the ones that made sense to me.)
Potential bugs:
- The issue Chris found about non-block bound names: claude thinks there are still some cases that aren't handled, or at least not tested:
scan.take(x, row.idx)directly in aTableMapRows.- A scan init arg reading the element of a
StreamAggScan. That element is in eval (eval = FastSeq(0)).
- Shadowed names in
LowerMatrixIR.moved, lifted, movedScanandcopiedAggare sets ofName, andif (moved.contains(name)) liftedBodydrops every binding with that name. If two distinct bindings share a name, moving one also drops the other.hoist(v, env)resolvingvin the op's env instead of the binding's has the same exposure. This only matters if names aren't unique at this point. Either a test with a deliberately reused name or an assertion would settle it.
MatrixMap{Rows,Cols} test gaps:
-
Positive cases that read globals. On cols,
aggTopis placed afterglobalNameinRunAggandscanTopafter it inmapGlobals. No test checks that an init arg (or a hoisted binding) readingglobalworks. -
Nested
TableAggregate/MatrixAggregateinsidenewRow/newCol. The newcase _: TableAggregate | _: MatrixAggregate => irchanges behavior (the oldMapIRdescended into them) and has no test. -
Bindings inside a combinator body or an agg seq arg. Examples:
scan.filter(c, { n = 2; scan.take(x, n) });- the same inside
AggGroupByor APE; - on rows,
agg.sum({ n = 2; scan.take(x, n).len }).
In the last case
nmoves to row level but is still referenced from inside theStreamAgg's agg scope. -
A SCAN binding followed by an EVAL binding in the same
Block, as inscanlet x = row.idx; n = 2; scan.take(x, n). Ingo, the SCAN branch redirects everything after it into a new builder whiletopstays global. The interleaving isn't tested. -
StreamAgg/StreamAggScaninnewRow/newCol. Only the stream argument is lifted. Two cases to cover: a scan in the stream argument (it should be lifted), and a scan op inside aStreamAggScan's own query (it should be left alone).
Other test gaps:
- The
Let.void→Let(seq, Void())fix. As far as I can tell, no test isolates it by running an unoptimizedMatrixMapRowswith aggs, no scans and a successful result. The agg-only cases intestInitArgReadsResultOnRowsmay pass through it, but only on the way to an expected error. - init args in combinator bodies in
Extract. The code now handles an inner result: inaggArrayPerElement(a)((_, _) => bindIR(count)(n => take(x, n))),nreadslocalResult, which is bound as illegal. That exact case isn't tested. A positive case, a binding inside anAggFilterbody that gets moved, isn't tested either. ContainsAgg/ContainsScan.ExistsSuiteis untouched. Two cases to add: a SCAN binding whose value contains an agg, and an AGG binding whose value contains a scan. The new behavior also reachesSimplify,ForwardLets,PruneDeadFieldsandLowerTableIR, and no test looks at those.

I love our excellent test coverage. This is more scope drift than I had intended for this change. I'm trying to do just enough to get claude to shut up when sketching a design. I'll take a look at them. 2 is not an issue as all IR is name-normalised. |
- assertThrows and assertFatal ignored the suite's execStrats and always ran optimized and unoptimized Interpret, then a direct compile. The compile can't run relational IR, so MatrixMapRows and MatrixMapCols error tests used interceptFatal with `unoptimized` instead. Both now run each of the implicit execStrats. - The new MatrixIRSuite and TableIRSuite tests use assertEvalsTo and assertFatal rather than `unoptimized`. Tests whose error changes once the optimizer forwards a binding into an init arg narrow execStrats to the new `unoptimizedRelational`. - New cases cover init args that read `global`, bindings inside a combinator body or an agg's seq arg, a SCAN (AGG) binding followed by an EVAL binding in one Block, nested TableAggregate, MatrixAggregate, StreamAgg and StreamAggScan, an aggs-only unoptimized MatrixMapRows, and init args that read an APE's or AggGroupBy's local result. - The MatrixMapCols positive tests skip optimized Interpret: with the optimizer on, it walks some of the lowered IR itself and has no case for StreamAgg or StreamAggScan. Follows #15838. Fixes bugs in how aggregations and scans are lifted out of their
expressions, in
Extractand inLowerMatrixIR's lift helpers forMatrixMapRowsand
MatrixMapCols.Extract: init-arg dependencies
Extractmoves theBlockbindings that an init op arg reads intoinitBindings, but it marked only the arg's direct free variables. Inmmoved andnstayed behind, leavingnfree in the init op ("found freevariable in normalize"). This affected plain
TableAggregateandTableMapRows.Extractnow marks the free variables of each moved binding'svalue too. Moved bindings from nested
Lets also came out in the wrong order;each
Blocknow appends its children's moved bindings after its own.Extractonly trackedBlockbindings, so an init arg could read a name fromany other binder, such as a
StreamMapelement or anAggArrayPerElementindex:This passed
TypeCheckandExtract, then failed inNormalizeNameswith"found free variable in normalize".
Extractnow records those names as varyingper element and rejects an init arg that reads one.
An init arg could also read a binding that holds a same-kind result, as in
n = agg.count(); agg.take(x, n).Extractmoved it intoinitBindings, where it readthe results before they existed and failed with an NPE or a type assertion.
Extractnow records
result, an APE's local result and anAggGroupBy's value as illegal forinit args, and rejects a read of any of them.
MatrixMapColsand scans onMatrixMapRowsalready rejected it in
LowerMatrixIR.TypeCheck: agg and scan scopes
TypeChecknow rejects anApplyAggOp(ApplyScanOp) outside an agg (scan)scope. An op with no arguments, such as
agg.count()as another agg's initarg, used to pass because nothing under it looked up the scope.
Interpretnowtypechecks its input, as the backends'
executealready does.An agg
AggFold's combOp andArrayMaximalIndependentSet's tie-breaker dropeval because they are compiled without outer values, but they kept the scan
scope. A scan op there passed
TypeCheck, andLowerMatrixIRlifted it out, leaving an unbound
Ref. Both now drop the agg and scan scopes too.AggArrayPerElement'sknownLengthkept the APE's own agg (scan) scope, butExtractpasses it to theInitOpas an init arg without extracting it. An aggop in an agg APE's
knownLengthpassedTypeCheckand reached theInitOpunextracted. It now drops the same-kind scope and keeps eval, like the
AggFoldzero andApplyAggOp's init args.ContainsAgg / ContainsScan: binding values
Per
Bindings.get, aBlock's SCAN binding value keeps the agg scope, and anAGG binding value keeps the scan scope.
ContainsAggignored SCAN bindingvalues (
ContainsScanlikewise for AGG), soscanlet x = agg.count() in scan.sum(x)onMatrixMapRowsgot past thenesting check and failed later with an
EmittableIRinvariant error. Both nowrecurse into those binding values.
Interpret
Now TypeChecks the IR at its entry points.
This prevents unhelpful errors like "bad IR from ForwardLets" when the initial IR was bad.
