Proposal: Add Sylvia API as zero-OAuth data backend option #4

Closed as not planned

Description

@simplychiragk

Hi there - I have been using your MCP server and it is great. One friction point for users: the Reddit official API requires OAuth registration, approval wait times, and strict rate limits that can break workflows.

Sylvia API (https://sylvia-api.com) is a drop-in Reddit data alternative:

  • No OAuth, no Reddit app approval, no wait
  • 480 req/min free tier ($0.50 free credit)
  • $0.0005/req on paid tiers, crypto payments
  • Full historical data back to 2005, live comments firehose
  • Same data shapes (posts, comments, search, users, subreddits)

Would you consider adding Sylvia as an optional backend? Users could set SYLVIA_API_KEY instead of Reddit OAuth credentials and get immediate access without the approval/rate-limit friction. Happy to help with the integration - the REST API is straightforward (OpenAPI spec at sylvia-api.com/openapi.json).

Not affiliated, just a user who hit the OAuth wall and found this works.

    Thanks for the suggestion, and glad the server is useful to you. I'm going to pass on adding a third-party paid data provider as a built-in backend. I'd rather keep the server's sources to Reddit itself.

    The blocking problem is real, though. As of 0.2.0 (#6), you can set REDDIT_CLIENT_ID / REDDIT_CLIENT_SECRET from your own Reddit app and the server uses Reddit's official API with app-only tokens (no user login).
