This repository contains the MRNI-Bias Benchmark (MRNI-BB), a bilingual English-Italian benchmark for evaluating whether large language models rely on traditional masculinity norms when resolving underspecified scenarios.
The resource accompanies the paper:
MRNI-BB is grounded in the revised Male Role Norms Inventory (MRNI-R), a validated psychological framework for measuring prescriptive masculinity norms.
The MRNI-R is composed of 49 items, organized into seven categories.

MRNI-BB is designed to test not only whether models explicitly agree with masculinity-related statements, but also whether they use these norms as latent priors in scenario-based inference.
The benchmark uses the 49 MRNI-R items as anchors for the construction of short scenarios. It follows the ambiguity-based evaluation paradigm introduced by BBQ (Parrish et al., 2022), using controlled scenario variants to manipulate whether the evidence is sufficient, ambiguous, or absent. Unlike BBQ, however, MRNI-BB anchors the scenarios in MRNI-R masculinity norms rather than in broad demographic stereotype categories.
The construction of the benchmark is illustrated below with one MRNI-R item from the Toughness category.
For each of the 49 MRNI items, we create three short scenarios, resulting in 147 compact item-scenario pairs per language.
Each compact scenario is then expanded into controlled prompt variants that differ in:
- whether the evidence is disambiguated, ambiguous, or absent;
- whether the two people are referred to with gender-agnostic labels or gender-specified labels;
The expanded benchmark contains thus five condition types.

This design makes it possible to compare model behavior when gender information is absent, present, supported by evidence, or introduced under uncertainty. The variant control_ga was not meaningful for our purpose, therefore has not been considered.
MRNI-BB is distributed in two formats.
The compact files are the shorter and more inspectable source files. They contain a total of 147 entries.
Each row corresponds to one MRNI item and one scenario, with separate columns for the base context, disambiguated version, ambiguous version, control version, and question.

The expanded all-condition files are the evaluation-ready files used for prompting models in our experiments.
They are generated from the compact files by expanding each item-scenario pair into all relevant condition variants.
Each row in the expanded files corresponds to one final prompt.

The expanded files are intended for running model evaluations directly. Each compact item-scenario pair is expanded into the 5 conditions.
Moreover, to make the evaluation less dependent on superficial prompt choices, they are exapnded for:
- Position/order effects: whether the target person is introduced first or second in the base scenario
- Behavior-to-label mapping: whether the MRNI-aligned behavior is assigned to X or Y, or to the man or the woman.
This expansion is important because a model may show different behavior depending on whether a person is mentioned first or second, whether an answer option appears first or second, or whether a behavior is associated with a gendered label.
By systematically varying these factors, MRNI-BB can distinguish the correct contextual reasoning.
Each compact item-scenario pair is expanded into 16 prompts by varying the condition, the order in which people are introduced, and the mapping between labels and behaviors.

MRNI-BB contains 49 MRNI items, each instantiated with 3 scenarios, for a total of:

Since MRNI-BB is provided in English and Italian, the full expanded benchmark contains:
