CleanCites is a simple Firefox/Chromium extension designed to help you hide or highlight citations in browser-based scientific journals. Whether you're trying to declutter your reading experience or focus on references, CleanCites makes it easier to control how citations appear while browsing academic papers.
- Hide Citations: Automatically hides in-line citations to reduce visual clutter while reading a scientific paper.
- Highlight Citations: Optionally highlight citations for easier navigation and reference identification.
- Compatible with major browsers: Works with both Firefox and Chromium-based browsers (such as Google Chrome).
Visit the official Plugin Page
- Download the CleanCites Extension ZIP.
- Open Chrome/Chromium and go to the extensions page (
chrome://extensions/
). - Enable Developer Mode.
- Click Load unpacked and select the directory where you extracted the CleanCites extension.
- Hide/Unhide: Hiding or showing citations
- Highlight/Remove Highlightes: Highlighting or Removing Highlights of citations.
- Check if it contains a year in parentheses (e.g., (2021))
- Check for author-year format: "Author, A. (YYYY)"
- Check for citation patterns with journal names or volume/page info
- Min 5 letter words, ensures bracketed text does not start with e.g. or see.
