Releases: alex-ball/bathbib
Version 7.0
This release brings the styles in line with the Summer 2024 update to Harvard (Bath).
-
Support has been added for parliamentary debates.
-
The old format for legal cases has been replaced. Entries written for previous versions will now yield references closer to the standard neutral citation format and the format used in OSCOLA. Some additional fields are needed in order to yield references in the longer format required since 2024.
The Harvard (Bath) specification does not cover all variations that the three implementations are capable of expressing, and their behaviour outside the specification's strictures is known to be inconsistent. Some inconsistencies were identified and removed in this release, but more work needs to be done to align them.
Version 6.0
This release brings the styles in line with the Spring 2022 update to Harvard (Bath).
All three styles support the new format for archived visual artistic works, and some new rules (not evident in the published guidance) on the placement of title-related elements for works known by their title and on how the ‘[Online]’ tag appears.
-
Implementing the new rules has caused some breaking changes in the BibTeX and biblatex styles:
-
Since entry type clarifications such as ‘Photograph’ and ‘Computer program’ are now handled differently from translated titles, in particular as regards their position relative to the version and how they interact with the ‘[Online]’ tag, they should now be placed in
entrysubtyperather thantitleaddon. (bathx.bst, biblatex) -
The
notefield is now in a consistent position across the styles (before the publisher statement) so, if you were using it to hack how an entry appears other than in ways shown in the manual, you may need a different approach. (bath.bst,bathx.bst)
-
-
The CSL style has been extensively rewritten to make it easier to maintain, and hopefully eliminate differences in output across implementations.
-
The biblatex style has been rewritten to eliminate the dependency on the standard
.bbxfiles, to improve clarity and efficiency and to make the style a little more robust against future biblatex changes. Similarities in source structure between the biblatex and BibTeX – and to a lesser extent, CSL – styles should be more apparent now.
Version 5.0
This release brings the styles in line with the Summer 2021 update to Harvard (Bath).
-
Breaking changes to both bath-bst and biblatex-bath – if you are upgrading from the version 4 styles, please note the following points:
-
Series names (except those in
legislationandjurisdictionentries) are now coerced to sentence case, so any capital letters you want to keep need to be protected with braces. -
The ‘[Online]’ tag is now also triggered by
urldate/urlyear. In cases where it occurs directly after the title, it is no longer left behind (after the year) if the title is moved to the head of the reference. (Inbath.bst, it istitleaddonthat moves.) -
bath-bst: Maps need to be given the
bookentry type; previouslymanualwas recommended.
-
-
biblatex-bath: The style now sets
\bibhangto 0pt by default. -
bath-bst: The
articleandmanualentry types now support themonthfield. -
CSL: Support has been added for new entry types
regulation, softwareandstandardfrom CSL v1.0.2, solving a long-standing issue with software entries in particular.
Version 4.0
This release brings the styles in line with the Summer 2020 update to Harvard (Bath).
-
Breaking change
referenceandinreferenceentries use the new format for books known by their title, where the book title is at the head of the reference and an entry title (if applicable) is given in italics after the edition.

biblatex-bath
Version 3.2
Changes since the previous release:
-
biblatex-bath
- Datasets now use the dedicated
@datasetdriver. - If the title is at the head of the reference, "[Online]" is now printed after the type.
- Fixed bug where a DOI would be printed twice for
@onlineentries. - Fixed bug (#7) where a version number might be printed twice.
- Fixed bug (#6) where a stray comma had been accidentally introduced into
\textciteoutput (thanks to @moewew for reporting). - Fixed bug (#7) where day/month information would be repeated in
@onlineentries (thanks to @moewew for reporting).
- Datasets now use the dedicated

Version 3.1 of biblatex-bath
This is an update to biblatex-bath only, for compatibility with biblatex v3.13 (and v3.7).
Version 3.0
This release brings the styles in line with the Summer 2019 update to Harvard (Bath).
-
biblatex-bath
- While the style has been updated with biblatex v3.12 in mind, compatibility has been reintroduced for biblatex v3.7, which is the version currently available on Overleaf.
-
Breaking changes to both bath-bst and biblatex-bath – if you are upgrading from the version 2.0 styles, please note the following points:
-
Journal titles are now coerced to sentence case, so any capital letters you want to keep need to be protected with braces.
-
Entries of type
unpublishedare now explicitly marked as unpublished. This is usually what you now require, but may have unwanted side effects if you have been following the conventions of thebath.bststyle: see the manual for alternative entry types to use. -
With entry types that usually expect an
institutionororganizationinstead of apublisher, if you gave apublisherin earlier versions theinstitution/organizationwould be ignored. Now they are printed before the publication block.
-
Version 2.0.1 of biblatex-bath
This is a future-proofing update to biblatex-bath only, in anticipation of a change in the packages loaded by biblatex.
Version 2.0
Changes since version 1.0:
-
biblatex-bath
- Updated to reflect changes in Harvard (Bath) style.
- Updated to work with biblatex v3.8+.
- Legal references can now be given in a more semantic fashion (c.f. biblatex-oscola, biblatex-oxref).
- The value of the
titleaddonfield is now automatically wrapped in brackets (c.f. biblatex-apa, biblatex-oxref).
-
bath-bst
- Updated to reflect changes in Harvard (Bath) style.
- Improved layout and documentation of BST code.
- New
bathxvariant that mimics the behaviour of biblatex-bath, including most of the data model and the automatic insertion of ‘n.d.’, ‘[Online]’ and brackets aroundtitleaddon.
Version 1.0
(First released internally to the University of Bath on 24 Oct 2016.)
Initial release of both biblatex-bath (for biblatex and Biber) and bath-bst (for legacy BibTeX).
See the PDF files included in the zip files for the documentation of how to install and use the styles.
