Summary

  • Usage scans run in a dedicated worker with a 1.5 GB heap cap and no main-thread fallback, so a scan that runs out of memory fails its request instead of host-service.
  • Agent usage is read incrementally: SQLite collectors read only token fields and only new or changed rows; transcript logs resume where the last scan stopped.
  • Scan state is cached on disk, so a restarted host does not rescan everything (11.5 s cold → 0.3 s on a heavy machine).

Why / Context

A user report on 2.0.5: host-service ran out of memory (V8 heap ~3.7 GB) about 6 s after every start, so the host kept disconnecting until the app stopped restarting it. The Devin collector loaded the full text of every assistant message from a 7.3 GB sessions.db with .all(). The startup leaderboard publish triggers that scan.

Two things turned one large file into a crash loop:

  1. Host workers had no heap limit, so an OOM in a worker was fatal for the whole process.
  2. A crashed worker task was retried inline on the main thread with the same input.

How It Works

Isolation (workers/):

  • HostWorkerPool gains resourceLimits and noInlineFallback: { pauseAfterCrashMs }.
  • usage-worker-pool.ts creates one usage worker with a 1.5 GB heap cap. It never runs a task inline; after a crash it pauses for 10 minutes.
  • usage.history and usage.leaderboardPayload use this pool. The shared host-worker pool is unchanged.

Incremental reads (usage/history/):

  • SQLite collectors project only token fields in SQL and stream rows.
    • Devin and Copilot read rows past a rowid watermark (sqlite-tail.ts).
    • OpenCode re-reads rows by time_updated.
    • Hermes is reused until its database or WAL changes.
  • Line-based logs (Claude, Codex, Pi, Muse, agy, fx, Grok) use resumable parsers whose state is plain JSON (line-cache.ts). A file that grew is read from its saved byte offset. A file that shrank or was replaced is read again.
  • usage-index.ts keeps a 92-day snapshot in the usage worker.
    • A refresh runs in the background and outlives the request that started it.
    • A request waits up to 60 s, then gets the last snapshot. On a cold start with no snapshot yet, it gets a retryable error.
    • Cursor is fetched per request, because it attributes entries with the caller's workspace paths.
  • usage-store.ts saves parser state and watermarks to $SUPERSET_HOME_DIR/usage/usage-cache.db.
    • It writes at most every 5 minutes, and right after the first scan.
    • Rows are written only at the end of a scan, so any saved row is a consistent point to resume from.
    • The cache is keyed by the host-service version, so each release starts a new one. An unreadable file is deleted and rebuilt.

Manual QA

All runs used the dev desktop app driven over CDP with real clicks, while a probe sampled renderer long tasks, host event-loop delay (health.check every 100 ms) and Electron-main round trips.

  • Cold scan of a real 90-day history (~30B tokens; Claude, Codex, a 2.3 GB OpenCode DB). The page loaded in 12.3 s; host loop p99 46 ms; renderer longest task 58 ms; Electron main max 1 ms.
  • Warm 30d / 90d / 7d switches loaded in 0.5 / 3.1 / 0.5 s, with host loop max 3–12 ms and no renderer long tasks.
  • A 2 GB synthetic Devin DB like the report's: the cold scan took 14 s with no renderer long tasks. Devin's total was exact (230,000 tokens). host-service RSS was about 477 MB, including the worker.
  • Host-service restarted mid-scan: the in-flight request failed with a network error, not a hang. The next host computed correct totals, and no partial cache was left behind.
  • Under Electron with the production bundle, the pre-fix scan code on the 2 GB DB hit ERR_WORKER_OUT_OF_MEMORY. The request failed cleanly, the pool paused, and the host process stayed alive.
  • On real data, the uncached scan, a cold scan writing the cache, and a restart from the cache give identical per-agent counts, tokens and session labels.

Testing

  • bun test src/trpc/router/usage src/workers src/no-main-loop-blocking.test.ts: 191 pass.
  • node --import tsx --test …/usage-store.node-test.ts …/usage-sqlite.node-test.ts: 9 pass. Both run in CI through test:integration:terminal.
  • New tests cover:
    • resuming an appended file, and resuming after a restart from JSON state;
    • a replaced, shrunk or in-place rewritten file; a saved state the parser rejects; an unterminated last line;
    • single-flight refresh and the bounded wait;
    • the no-inline-fallback pool;
    • the store's version reset, corrupt-file rebuild, leaving a locked file alone, eviction and write throttle;
    • Hermes scan reuse, a mid-read failure not double-counting, dedupe-key pruning, and a Muse resume matching a fresh parse.
  • I confirmed the key tests fail when the behaviour they cover is removed.
  • bun run typecheck: no errors in host-service.
  • bun run lint is clean.
  • The real-data comparison was re-run after the review fixes: the uncached scan, a cold cache and a restart give identical per-agent counts, tokens and session labels.

Design Decisions

  • A worker cap, not just smaller reads: reads are now small, but the cap and the no-inline rule mean the next unexpected input fails one request instead of the host.
  • Cache on disk, not only in memory: with a memory-only cache, every host restart (the moment the crash happened) is a full rescan, and an idle-reaped worker loses it.
  • Parser state as plain JSON: a parser can be rebuilt from saved state and resume mid-file.

Known Limitations

  • The first scan after a release, or on a new machine, is still a full read (in the background, with flat memory).
  • On plain Node (not Electron), a worker heap cap does not contain every allocation pattern. Electron, which production uses, did.
  • The old OpenCode JSON-file format is still read in full each refresh (each file is capped at 32 MB).
  • The store's Node test sits in test:integration:terminal, the only Node suite CI runs. A dedicated task would need turbo.jsonc and ci.yml changes.

Follow-ups

  • Move session-share off the main thread. Its first share of a large profile does synchronous renames at boot and on account switch. I'm doing this in a separate PR.
  • .claude.json is parsed whole on the main thread for quota and logins (about 100 ms for a 100 MB file).

Risks / Rollout

  • Risk: the usage-history numbers come from new parsing paths. These were checked against the old code on real data and matched exactly.
  • Risk: the new cache file under $SUPERSET_HOME_DIR/usage/, about 50 MB for a heavy user.
  • Rollback: revert this PR. The cache file is ignored by older builds and can be deleted safely.

Summary by cubic

Fixes the host-service crash loop where a usage scan could run out of memory and take down the whole process (~3.7 GB heap, ~6 s after boot, triggered by the Devin collector loading every message text from a 7.3 GB sessions.db with .all()). Usage scans now run in their own worker capped at 1.5 GB with no inline fallback, so a scan that runs out of memory fails its request and pauses the pool for 10 minutes instead of killing the host. A worker that crashes while idle pauses the pool the same way, queued work is rejected until a replacement runs, and the crash is reported to Sentry.

Incremental reads

  • SQLite collectors project only token fields and read only new or changed rows (rowid watermarks for Devin and Copilot, time_updated for OpenCode, file signature for Hermes). Devin and Copilot rows are read in 2,000-row batches with yields; batches end on existing rowids so a sparse table loops no empty ranges, and malformed rows are skipped via a json_valid guard. OpenCode projects time and tokens with -> so a string value skips one message instead of aborting the whole read.
  • Line-based log parsers are resumable; a file that grew is read from its saved byte offset, and a line a parser throws on is skipped, not the rest of the file.
  • Scan state is cached in $SUPERSET_HOME_DIR/usage/usage-cache.db, so a restarted host resumes instead of rescanning (11.5 s cold → 0.3 s warm on a heavy machine). The cache dir is owner-only because titles come from prompts.
  • The usage worker keeps a 92-day index refreshed in the background; requests wait up to 60 s, then get the last snapshot, and requests for the same window share a scan. Parser state is pruned past the window — every 50,000 lines while reading — so unbound logs like Grok's unified.jsonl stay small, and a file is read again when the cutoff moves earlier than its saved prune.
  • Cursor has one in-flight collection per window and workspace set, shared and reused across requests and capped at 20 s so a hung keychain lookup cannot retire the warm index. A failed collection is dropped, not reused, so the next request tries again.
  • The cache is deleted only when SQLite reports corruption; a locked file falls back to memory, failed reads count as misses, and failed saves are logged. A file replaced mid-read is never saved under its new inode.
  • Hermes dropped its fingerprint cache, whose signature could miss same-size writes; its resume tests run in WAL mode to match how Hermes writes state.db.

Rollout

  • First scan after a release or on a new machine is still a full background read, with flat memory.
  • A cold index or a paused pool surfaces as a retryable TIMEOUT, which the Usage page retries every 30 s; SERVICE_UNAVAILABLE is reserved for an offline host and stays with the connection retry policy. A missing worker bundle is an internal error reported to Sentry.
  • The cache file is ~50 MB for heavy users, keyed by host-service version, ignored by older builds, and safe to delete.
  • Session titles are read only for sessions that have entries; session cwd is read whole, re-applied each scan, and a cleared cwd replaces the cached one.
  • On plain Node a worker heap cap does not contain every allocation pattern; on Electron (what production runs) it does.

Walkthrough

Usage-history collection now uses incremental file and SQLite scans backed by saved state. History and leaderboard requests use a worker-local index and dedicated worker pool. Worker failure handling, pending-scan retries, and tests for the scan and cache behavior are also added.

Changes: Usage History Pipeline

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parser and scan-state primitives
packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/usage/history/parse.ts, line-cache.ts, usage-store.ts, related tests
Added offset-based line reading, resumable parser APIs, a line cache, and memory and SQLite state stores. Tests cover parsing, cache reuse and recovery, and persistence.
Incremental file-based collectors
packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/usage/history/entries.ts, parse.ts, agy.ts, fx.ts, grok.ts, muse.ts, pi.ts, copilot-rows.ts, devin-rows.ts, opencode.ts, related tests
File-based collectors use parser callbacks, cached state, and shared cutoff and session metadata handling. Collector setup no longer invokes the Cursor network collector. OpenCode legacy JSON reads use the bounded JSON reader.
Incremental SQLite collectors
packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/usage/history/sqlite-tail.ts, copilot.ts, devin.ts, hermes.ts, opencode-db.ts, usage-sqlite.node-test.ts
Added append-only SQLite reads and session metadata helpers. Copilot, Devin, and OpenCode collectors use saved scan state. Hermes session titles are truncated to the configured text limit. Tests cover SQLite reader behavior and collector cases.
Usage index and request integration
packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/usage/history/usage-index.ts, aggregate.ts, leaderboard-days.ts, usage-index.test.ts, packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/usage/usage.ts, packages/host-service/src/workers/tasks/usage.ts, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/settings/usage/hooks/useHostUsageHistory/useHostUsageHistory.ts
Added a worker-local index with background refresh and filtered snapshots. History and leaderboard calculations now receive a collector callback. Request handlers map indexing and worker errors, and the desktop query retries pending scan errors.
Dedicated usage worker lifecycle
packages/host-service/src/workers/WorkerTaskRunner.ts, host-worker-pool.ts, host-worker-pool.test.ts, usage-worker-pool.ts, packages/host-service/src/app.ts, packages/host-service/package.json, packages/host-service/src/workers/test-fixtures/*
Worker runners support resource limits and crash callbacks. The usage pool pauses after crashes without an inline fallback, and application cleanup disposes it. Worker tests cover crash and unavailable-worker cases, and the integration test command includes usage-store and SQLite tests.

Several important failure paths are fixed, but incremental history can still retain stale usage or omit completed Cursor results. Very long SQLite scans can also lose progress when the worker times out. Resolve or explicitly accept these remaining limitations before merging.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title uses conventional commit format and names the two main changes: isolating usage scans in a capped worker and reading agent logs incrementally. Both match the changeset (usage-worker-pool with 1.5 GB cap and no inline fallback, plus resumable parsers, SQLite row watermarks, and the usage-cache store). It is somewhat long at 91 characters, but it is specific and accurate.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template sections: What & why, How I tested it, and Checklist. It covers the problem (host-service OOM crash loop from the Devin collector), the design (worker isolation, incremental reads, on-disk cache), QA steps, tests, and rollout risks. The template's checklist items are not ticked, and the description does not follow the template's headings exactly. It also adds extra sections (Known Limitations, Follow-ups, Risks / Rollout). The content is substantive, so the check passes.

Verdict: needs changes. The isolation and incremental design work in my runs (an OOM is contained; incremental, restart-from-cache and full-read totals match). But all four red CI jobs come from this PR.

  • High usage-index.ts:2: resolveSupersetHomeDir was removed on main (refactor: one resolver for the app home directory (SUPER-2983) #9157, now resolveAppHomeDir). This breaks Typecheck, Build CLI, and the HostWorkerPool tests on the merge commit. Rebase and switch the import.
  • High signatures/v1/cla.json: unrelated CLA bot data, and the only Lint failure. Drop it.
  • Medium usage-store.ts:1,75: rmSync trips the no-main-loop-blocking ratchet, which also fails locally. Use unlinkSync (ignore ENOENT) or allow-list the file.
  • Medium sqlite-tail.ts:80-102 (Devin, Copilot): a row updated in place after its first read keeps its old values, and its committed copy is dropped as a duplicate. Synthetic probe: 38 tokens incremental vs 533 full. Make the dedupe last-wins, or document the append-only assumption.
  • Low WorkerTaskRunner.ts:532 with usageOffLoop: a request abort retires the usage worker and its warm index or in-flight cold scan.
  • Low usage-index.ts:72-80: a cold scan over 60 s now shows "Couldn't read usage history" instead of "Scanning…".

300-305: Major · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Test requests queued before a worker crash.

The test submits the second request only after the first rejects. It cannot detect a queued request starting in a replacement worker before the pause. Add a single-worker test that queues two distinct requests before the crash and checks that no replacement work starts.

153-154: Minor · Stability & Availability · Low value

Enforce the byte limit during the read.

If a legacy OpenCode message grows after stat, file.readFile can allocate and parse more than 32 MB. Read at most maxBytes + 1 bytes and reject oversized input before decoding or parsing it.

79-85: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Low value

Add a test for a growing in-place rewrite.

The rewrite test covers only a shrink and a replacement. A longer same-inode rewrite can retain stale parser state without failing these assertions. Assert both the rewritten result and the lines fed to the parser.

packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/usage/history/devin.ts: 2

60-66: Minor · Potential issue · Heavy lift

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Devin message_nodes are now read through a rowid-only append cursor. If an existing message gains or changes metrics in place, unchanged row count and maximum rowid do not invalidate the cached result.

The request's final token usage can remain missing or stale indefinitely.

This can occur when: A streaming assistant row is scanned before final metrics are stored, then updated without inserting another row.

52-54: Minor · Potential issue · Poor tradeoff

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Cached message entries contain values joined from mutable session rows, but message-only invalidation does not notice session changes. Titles are refreshed separately; working_directory and fallback model are not.

Usage can remain assigned to the wrong project or fallback model despite corrected session metadata.

This can occur when: A session's working directory or model is populated or corrected after its message has been cached, without a message-row update. The analogous dependency exists for Copilot cwd and OpenCode directory.

been rewritten, discard the stale cached usage and reparse the file, otherwise
preserve the existing incremental readLinesFrom path.
- Around line 64-70: Update the incremental parsing flow around create and
parser.onLine to retain enough information to recompute timestamps that were
derived from file mtime; when mtime changes as the file grows, refresh those
fallback timestamps before returning parser.result(). Keep cached usage dates
and window totals consistent with a fresh parse.
- Around line 92-99: In the cursor-building flow, verify that the file read is

while retaining the existing handling of qualifying records.

trailing CR when it may be the CR in a CRLF delimiter following exactly
`MAX_LINE_LENGTH` payload bytes; defer the length decision until the next chunk
arrives and the CR can be stripped. Continue discarding lines that exceed the
limit after delimiter handling.
- Line 408: Update the parser-state accumulation at state.entries.push to prune

required to resume parsing correctly.

- Around line 31-35: Update UsageIndexingError and the usage history
query/client flow so a cold scan taking over 60 seconds produces a recognizable
indexing state instead of an unclassified internal error, and the history client
retries while that state is returned. Stop retrying once indexing completes and
the history result is available.
- Line 96: Update the scan flow around `this.scan` so SQLite work runs off the
index worker’s event loop, using the project’s established mechanism for
offloading blocking work. Ensure the worker can still process timeout and
shutdown-grace handling while the scan runs, and preserve `endScan()` progress
saving before retry or termination.

Review comments at

exercises a key that was already persisted, so it catches reloading deleted data
from SQLite.

Review comments at

- Line 75: Replace the synchronous cleanup call in the usage-history cleanup
flow with a non-blocking approach so it passes the blocking-call ratchet.
Preserve the ratchet’s protection against blocking calls on the event loop; do
not weaken or bypass it to accommodate `rmSync`.
- Around line 73-77: Update the catch in openStore so transient SQLite lock
errors such as SQLITE_BUSY propagate to its memory-fallback handling without
deleting the live cache files. Preserve the existing cleanup and retry behavior
only for errors where deleting those files is safe.
- Line 70: Update the usage-cache directory setup around mkdirSync so the
directory is private before the database is opened: create it with restrictive
permissions and enforce those permissions when it already exists. Ensure this
protects the cache and its WAL without changing unrelated Superset home
permissions.
- Around line 81-84: Update the store’s delete and get behavior so deleted keys
are marked and get does not reload a marked key from SQLite before deletion is
persisted. Clear the marker when the key is explicitly saved again, preserving

Limit title reads to sessions with usage entries.

When a database has a large session history, every refresh materializes all titles before filtering them. This can exhaust the usage worker even when few sessions are in the usage window. Query the relevant session IDs in bounded batches for Copilot, Devin, and OpenCode.

Detect rewritten prefixes before resuming the scan.

If Claude truncates a transcript and appends enough data between scans, the file can retain its inode and exceed the saved offset. The cache then retains removed usage and skips replacement records. Check that the saved prefix is unchanged before resuming; otherwise, reparse the file.

Preserve the cache on lock errors.

When two host-service versions share a cache, a long write can make version initialization fail with SQLITE_BUSY. This catch then deletes the live cache files, which can lose saved scan progress. Propagate transient errors so openStore can use its memory fallback.

Keep deleted cursors from reloading.

If a read fails between saves, delete removes only the in-memory cursor. A later scan can reload it from SQLite. If the file was rewritten and grew, the parser can reuse the old prefix and report incorrect usage. Track deletions so get cannot reload them before persistence.

A usage scan that ran out of memory took down all of host-service. The
host-worker pool spawned workers without heap limits, so a V8 OOM in a
worker was fatal for the process, and a crashed task was retried inline
on the main thread with the same input.

Usage tasks now run in their own pool: one worker, a 1.5 GB heap cap,
and no inline fallback. A crash fails the request and pauses the pool
for ten minutes. HostWorkerPool gains `resourceLimits` and
`noInlineFallback: { pauseAfterCrashMs }`; other pools are unchanged.
A heavy Devin user crash-looped host-service: the usage scan loaded the
full text of every Devin message (a 7.3 GB sessions.db) with `.all()`.

- SQLite collectors project only token fields, so reply text never leaves
SQLite, and stream rows. Devin and Copilot read rows past a rowid
watermark; OpenCode re-reads rows by `time_updated`; Hermes is reused
  until its database changes.
- Line-based logs are parsed by resumable parsers with plain-JSON state:
a file that grew is read from where the last scan stopped.
- The usage worker keeps an index of the last 92 days. A refresh runs in
the background and outlives the request; a request waits up to 60 s,
  then gets the last snapshot.
- Parser state and watermarks are saved to
`$SUPERSET_HOME_DIR/usage/usage-cache.db` at most every 5 minutes, so a
restarted host resumes instead of rescanning. Each release starts a new
  cache.
- Cursor is fetched per request, since it attributes entries with the
  caller's workspace paths.
- Use `resolveAppHomeDir`, which replaced `resolveSupersetHomeDir` on
main; the stale import broke typecheck, the CLI build and every worker
  test.
- Usage store: delete the cache only when SQLite reports corruption. A
lock from another host-service now falls back to memory. A failed read
counts as a cache miss, a failed save is logged, and a deleted key
never loads back from its saved row. Uses `unlinkSync` per file, not
  `rmSync`.
- Append-only tail: a read commits its entries and dedupe keys only after
it succeeds. Dedupe keys are pruned when the window moves.
- Line cache: a saved state the parser rejects, or a file rewritten in
place (its first bytes changed), is read again from the start. An
unchanged file with an unterminated last line is not re-read.
- Session titles are read only for sessions that have entries.
- Usage requests coalesce per window. A cold index surfaces as a
  retryable TIMEOUT.
- Grok keeps "unknown" for an empty model id.
- Tests: Hermes reuse, a mid-read failure, key pruning, a locked cache
file, a Muse resume, and the new line-cache cases.

Request abort can discard the shared usage index

If a cold read times out while its refresh continues, an abort of a later dispatched request retires the usage worker. This discards the earlier refresh and can force a later request to rescan. An abort can also discard a warm in-memory snapshot.

Test rewrites that preserve the first 64 bytes.

Add a growing in-place rewrite with an unchanged 64-byte prefix and changed complete records before the saved offset. Compare the cached result with a fresh parse. The current test changes the first byte, so it misses the path where the cache can retain stale records.

On Linux a same-size write a few milliseconds after the fixture was
created kept state.db's mtime, so the signature did not change and the
test failed on CI. In WAL mode each write changes state.db-wal.

Cover a string-valued time field.

- The usage pool reports a crash to Sentry when it pauses, through a new
`onPause` hook. A crashed background scan has no request for
  `sentryMiddleware` to report on.
- A crash or a pause reaches the client as TIMEOUT, not
SERVICE_UNAVAILABLE. The relay sends SERVICE_UNAVAILABLE for an offline
host, and the renderer's connection retry policy owns that code. The
  Usage page retries TIMEOUT only.
- The first line a parser throws on is logged, once per read, so a parser
  bug does not pass silently.
- Cursor runs are keyed by the sorted workspace set, and a finished run
is reused for 5 minutes, so a lookup slower than the request's wait
  still lands.
- The idle-crash pool test waits for the pause instead of a fixed delay,
and checks the crash is reported once.

…f retries

- A failed Cursor collection is dropped, not reused for 5 minutes, so
  the next request tries again.
- A throwing `onPause` hook is logged; the pool still detaches the
  runner and rejects queued work.
- `WorkerPoolUnavailableError` carries a reason. Only a pause maps to a
retryable TIMEOUT. A missing worker bundle stays an internal error, so
  Sentry reports it.
