This milestone will bring MICM with its current functionality up to software standards for MUSICA, and is thus a prerequisite for future development. To allow gas-phase chemistry to be solved in the context of a 3-D climate/weather model, standard gas-phase reaction types (Arrhenius, Troe) and three specialized reaction types (NO+RO2, Tunneling, heterogeneous surface reactions) will be made available. Heterogeneous reactions involve a trace gas reacting on an aerosol to produce another trace gas (e.g., N2O5 (g) + aerosol → 2 HNO3 (g)). The heterogeneous reaction rate depends on the surface area of the aerosol and the uptake/reactivity (gamma) factor of the gas-phase reactant. An example reaction rate equation is given below. A Rosenbrock solver will be implemented optimized for use on CPUs using JIT compiling following the logic applied to the current MICM solver. This will allow the TS1 and TS2 mechanisms to be solved. This milestone will result in a version of MICM that conforms to the MUSICA standards for software, deployed in command-line MusicBox.
