shdoc-advanced is a documentation generator for bash/zsh/sh for generating API documentation in Markdown from shell scripts source.
shdoc-advanced parses annotations in the beginning of a given file and alongside function definitions, and creates a markdown file with ready to use documentation.
Generate documentation with the following command: $ shdoc < lib.sh > doc.md Source examples/readme-example.sh #!/bin/bash

Describes an expected exitcode of the function. Can be specified multiple times to describe all possible exitcodes and their conditions.

When you want to skip documentation generation for a particular function, you can specify this
@internal
tag.
It allows you to have the same style of doc comments across the script and keep internal
functions hidden from users.

The @deprecated
annotation marks a function as deprecated and adds a deprecation notice to the generated documentation. Additional annotations like @replacement
and @eol
can specify a replacement function and the end-of-life date/version.

The @alias
annotation allows defining an alternative name for a function. The alias is used in the generated documentation instead of the original function name.

The GitHub alerts feature enhances your documentation by adding specific callouts or highlights in the form of annotated blocks. These callouts can be used to emphasize important information, provide warnings, tips, or even draw attention to specific issues.

The Shdocfile
allows you to customize the behavior of shdoc-advanced
. It is a simple configuration file where you can set options to enhance the generated documentation.
Controls whether the version of the script is appended to its title in the generated documentation. The version is extracted from the @version
annotation.

Adds a footer at the end of the generated documentation. This is useful for branding or providing additional context.

To generate documentation, shdoc-advanced
expects a shell script with comments on stdin and will produce markdown as stdout.
$ shdoc < your-shell-script.sh > doc.md
The version
or v
flag provides a quick way to print the current version of shdoc-advanced
.
Usage:
$ shdoc version
1.8.0
$ shdoc v
1.8.0
