Survey current

Current state of deliverables

  • Survey & focus group: survey progressing well as above

Charlie - discussions w/advisory will happen, perhaps in lieu of focus groups Focus groups: David still interested in doing them in January

  • Curricula -good progress on core

    • Goal: content complete by OOB 8/22

  • mapping / bridging to current courses is currently unaddressed

  • Infrastructure simulation - first solid draft is done, basis for ongoing iteration. Discussion of developing/curating actual labs. Does Century College have resources/IP?

  • Seminar/Webinar: Recorded? Faculty to develop discussions of what they are doing and post to MNSCU Youtube channel

Mary: SoftChalk? LMS-compatible authoring tool compatible w/D2L

3-hour seminar - hold as an event, a virtual conference.

Svetlana: Faculty development days, people take turns doing presentations for development w/in institutions

Justin: Same content, viewed across institutions, will start to generate questions - look for FAQs

Pat: Star Symposium - online virtual conference on online education - CFP Sep 12

Working approach: Faculty focused on a given competency area to develop 30-40 minute presentation for virtual conference, videos to be posted to Advance-IT YouTube Channel

Friday 11/18 1-4 online conference - need 1 person from each New Directions project. Firasat to set up funding etc. -

Pyramid

Dept of Labor pyramid was reviewed and an approach for mapping the competency model was conceptually determined.

Agreement that we will pursue this when content is stabilized - will help promote the initiative.

OER Commons / MNSCU can host the final report & links to resources

Learning objectives

Agreement to keep LOs but need more context language that they are more intended as examples - not a master, authoritative list - similar to MSIS approach - also, if LOs can become competencies, this is better.

Svetlana feedback

  1. I reviewed "IT 2008 document Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Degree Programs in Information Technology". In the document, they divide the field into knowledge areas, which are then broken down further into units, which are defined in terms of individual topics and learning outcomes. Since you like the idea of organizing curricula into knowledge areas and then breaking it down to units, we can then tie individual learning outcomes and topics to these. For example, see below (under DCA - Digital Competency Area):

  2. I also liked Broad goals of an IT program section. For example, one of the goals is "Explain and apply appropriate information technologies and employ appropriate methodologies to help an individual or organization achieve its goals and objectives". The more we understand the goals/needs of organizations, such as a need for DevOps, Cloud, Virtualization, Product Management and other skills, the better we can identify knowledge areas for IT curricula and from them the learning objectives and topics to cover. I remember someone on our team wanted to interview organizations to find out their current needs, I think it is a great idea after reading this section. We already have some of that data from your working paper, but getting more specific skills that companies desire will make your proposed curricula very effective. I can try to interview a few IT managers to get more data on that.

  3. Section 3.3. Characteristics of an IT graduate is a good one also. It talks about what students need to know before they graduate. We can derive these characteristics after we organize knowledge areas and break them down to learning objectives.

Curricula recommendations

The curricula discussion started to open up some critical themes but was interrupted by the clock.

There was interest in keeping the goals & objectives at a higher level - leaving local autonomy for faculty to adapt to their specific situation. "What, not how."

The first half of the working paper (the analysis of current ACM curricula) was seen as more useful/appropriate than the second half which focuses more on pedagogy.

Questions – what is applicable to programming vs. infrastructure students?

What is applicable to general business students?

(Discussion of particular technologies, HTML, Javascript, shell)

What are the things that are common vs more specialized?

How to teach infrastructure as code?

Winona MIS (undergrad) mandates app dev (formerly VBasic, now C#)

Graduate students: currently have visual programming requirement

Recommendation: expand this with test-driven, full collaborative pipeline, w/ source & automated build, pkg mgmt & deployment

Testing/test-driven is hard to teach at early levels of programming. When/how can it be taught??

Concerns about breadth of scope of potential curriculum. What can be reduced in terms of requirements? Discussion of limiting hours devoted to project management, analysis & design, quality assurance requirements.

Limited # credit hours…
