I reviewed "IT 2008 document Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Degree Programs in Information Technology". In the document, they divide the field into knowledge areas, which are then broken down further into units, which are defined in terms of individual topics and learning outcomes. Since you like the idea of organizing curricula into knowledge areas and then breaking it down to units, we can then tie individual learning outcomes and topics to these. For example, see below (under DCA - Digital Competency Area):
-
I also liked Broad goals of an IT program section. For example, one of the goals is "Explain and apply appropriate information technologies and employ appropriate methodologies to help an individual or organization achieve its goals and objectives". The more we understand the goals/needs of organizations, such as a need for DevOps, Cloud, Virtualization, Product Management and other skills, the better we can identify knowledge areas for IT curricula and from them the learning objectives and topics to cover. I remember someone on our team wanted to interview organizations to find out their current needs, I think it is a great idea after reading this section. We already have some of that data from your working paper, but getting more specific skills that companies desire will make your proposed curricula very effective. I can try to interview a few IT managers to get more data on that.
-
Section 3.3. Characteristics of an IT graduate is a good one also. It talks about what students need to know before they graduate. We can derive these characteristics after we organize knowledge areas and break them down to learning objectives.

Charlie presented his overview of current curricula shortcomings. Group agreed that the topic "culture and execution" was too broad and each merited its own topic. Results of discussion have been incorporated into wiki curricula page.

1st draft questions done Ask: please review/critique survey by next week Logistics: how to publicize – New Directions attendees? CIOs – Pat can send – Advisory committee – DevOps & other meetups – Finalize this week, then do distribution strategy.
The curricula discussion started to open up some critical themes but was interrupted by the clock.
There was interest in keeping the goals & objectives at a higher level - leaving local autonomy for faculty to adapt to their specific situation. "What, not how."
The first half of the working paper (the analysis of current ACM curricula) was seen as more useful/appropriate than the second half which focuses more on pedagogy.
Questions – what is applicable to programming vs. infrastructure students?
What is applicable to general business students?
(Discussion of particular technologies, HTML, Javascript, shell)
What are the things that are common vs more specialized?
How to teach infrastructure as code?
Winona MIS (undergrad) mandates app dev (formerly VBasic, now C#)
Graduate students: currently have visual programming requirement
Recommendation: expand this with test-driven, full collaborative pipeline, w/ source & automated build, pkg mgmt & deployment
Testing/test-driven is hard to teach at early levels of programming. When/how can it be taught??
Concerns about breadth of scope of potential curriculum. What can be reduced in terms of requirements? Discussion of limiting hours devoted to project management, analysis & design, quality assurance requirements.
Limited # credit hours…
