Why the namespaces?

If you want to style using the epub:type attribute without a dirty “escaping character hack”, the epub namespace is required.

The xhtml namespace may also be useful if you edit your ePub file manually and use tags like acronym, which is deprecated in HTML5 but not in XHTML5.
