This is basically a "draw-the-rest-of-the-owl" PR.
I'm not sure how to introduce the implementation in piecemeal form since it's all so interconnected. A 3 ksloc new file isn't exactly reviewable. If you have any ideas how you'd like to split up the implementation to make the review less hopeless, I can give it shot.
