Both F-Pn manuscripts (Lat. 12044 and Lat. 15181) showed no images, because /manifest-proxy/ answered 500 for their manifests. Gallica refuses the default requests User-Agent with "403 Access Interdit", while accepting a descriptive one, so it works in the browser.

That 403 body then went into json.loads(response.text), raising JSONDecodeError (a ValueError, not a RequestException), so it escaped the view's handler and Django answered 500 where the code meant to answer 404. The same manifest opens fine in a browser, which is why the failure looked like Gallica's rather than ours.

Send an identifying User-Agent, call raise_for_status() and response.json() so an error status and an unparseable body both reach the handler, and turn away JSON that parses but is not an object, which would otherwise fail further down in the postprocessing. Report all of it as 502 rather than 404, so a caller can tell a library that failed us from a route that does not exist.

These requests had no timeout at all, so a library that stopped responding held one of the four gunicorn workers until gunicorn's own 600 second limit. They now give up after 5 seconds waiting to connect and 30 waiting for the body.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved manifest retrieval reliability by using explicit request identification and connection/body timeouts.
    • Upstream HTTP failures, invalid JSON, and unexpected JSON structures now return a clear 502 Bad Gateway response instead of an internal server error.
    • Manifest requests retain support for .json URL formats and continue normal processing after successful retrieval.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for successful requests and the supported upstream failure scenarios.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The manifest proxy now sends an identifying User-Agent, applies a configured timeout, validates upstream status and JSON data, and returns 502 Bad Gateway for upstream or parsing failures. Tests cover successful requests, format suffix restoration, and invalid responses.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Manifest retrieval and validation
app/public/cantusdata/views/manifest_proxy.py, app/public/cantusdata/test/core/views/test_manifest_proxy.py
The proxy uses explicit request headers and timeouts, restores the .json suffix when needed, validates HTTP and JSON responses, rejects non-object data, and returns 502 Bad Gateway for failures. Tests cover all updated paths.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to aa175

The proxy currently allows client-supplied manifest URLs to reach arbitrary internal or link-local services, potentially exposing responses through the application. Merge should be blocked until approved-host, destination, and redirect validation is added.

Explanation

The changes address issue #1007. They add an identifying User-Agent, call raise_for_status(), parse JSON with response.json(), reject non-object JSON, apply connection and read timeouts, and return HTTP 502 for upstream and parsing failures. Tests cover these behaviours.

Restrict manifest targets before the outbound request.

manifest_url comes from a client-controlled route parameter and reaches requests.get() without host, IP-range, or redirect restrictions. An attacker can request JSON endpoints on internal or link-local services and receive their response through this proxy.

Allow only approved manifest hosts. Validate each resolved destination and each redirect target before sending the request.
