Purpose
The horizontal resolved-gradient (geometric) SGS variance term is built on the gradient of q_tot along the θ_li surface, |∇_h q_tot − r ∇_h θ_li|² with r = (∂q_tot/∂z)/max(∂θ_li/∂z, θz_min), added to q′q′ only: large-scale stirring is quasi-adiabatic, so the moisture contrast a parcel brings to a level is the contrast along its isentrope, and after the adiabatic displacement only q_tot differs.
