CRC 265 (Losing and Regaining Control over Drug Intake) is a large collaborative research center funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) that focuses on substance use disorders and addiction. These disorders are characterized by a loss of control over drug intake and are associated with profound psychological, behavioral, and neurobiological changes that often persist over time. The overarching goal of CRC 265 is to understand the mechanisms that drive the transition from controlled to compulsive drug use, as well as the processes that allow individuals to regain control or achieve stable abstinence. To this end, the consortium combines longitudinal studies in humans with experimental research in animals, integrating data from real-world behavioral assessments, mobile and laboratory-based measurements, neuroimaging, and biological markers. By closely tracking changes in behavior, brain function, and environmental context over time, CRC 265 aims to identify early warning signals of relapse and loss of control, ultimately supporting the development of personalized, timely interventions for people at risk.

Dynamic systems theory predicts a so-called "critical slowdown" before a phase transition, in which the system becomes more sensitive to stimuli, manifesting as stronger autocorrelation and variance. Here, we investigate whether this phenomenon occurs when patients transition from drinking-as-usual to (relative) non-drinking phases (i.e., regaining control) using smartphone-based e-diaries.
