Source code formatting

I was wondering what kind of formatter should ideally be applied to the Java source files.

There are same basic rules in the README and some checkstyle rules enforcing that,
Other than that I could not find a fomatter config or tooling in the repository.

In the fork I ended up using the Eclipse formatter using spotless-maven-plugin for some opinionated formatting,

Is there any formatter people should ideally use or should they format new code just in any way their IDE formats?

I don't have an opinion either way, just wanted to understand how new code should look.

Originally, I just wanted to prevent useless diffs in commits but otherwise I didn't want to restrict contributors with too strict rules because people had very strong opinions about code formatting.

I think nowadays, with tools like Spotless, people are used more to just let the formatter to care about the code formatting rules (sometimes even on save). So I will try to setup Spotless with rules reasonably matching current style, I just don't want to have commit with huge diff just because of code reformat. I really value clear history (git blame).
