It might be a nice idea to switch to exoplayer in the future, a hacked up version can be found at: https://github.com/vanilla-music/vanilla/tree/exo-player

Issues:

Probably no EQ
No Gapless
Fails to play some files o_O (maybe use ffmpeg?)
Only builds with gradle right now (well..)
No Android 4.1 (API 15) support
