App only works when open

I am on andriod 9 and the app does work but only when its open and being displayed. If the screen is locked or the app moved to the background, it stops working entirely.

I am using Android 10 (Nokia 6.1). It does work even when the screen is locked or the main Vanilla Music app or the headphone detector application is in the background. Even if the main app is killed, the detector restarts it for me. The only time it does not work is when I remove the detector app from the recent applications, but that's intended.
