Wrong OS build number when downloading new symbols

Describe the bug

On a Windows 11 Home 24H2 system, after Cumulative Update for Windows Insider Preview (KB5065793),
both "Update history" and "Settings > System > About" reported OS build "26120.6760",
but the ExplorerPatcher popup (at reboot) said it was looking for symbols for 26100.6760 (which failed).

This is with the current release of ep_setup.exe, 22631.5335.68.2_14807a5 .

I haven't checked build numbers when I've gotten symbol update failures on other Windoze versions,
but I'll keep my eyes peeled.

Expected outcome

Popup should say it's looking for symbols for OS build 26120.6760 (shouldn't it?).

Actual outcome

Popup says it's looking for symbols for 26100.6760 .

Additional info

Happened at reboot after Cumulative Update for Windows Insider Preview (KB5065793) (26120.6760).
On a VMware Workstation 17.6.4 virtual machine running under Fedora 42 (x86_64).

Winaero Tweaker also reports the correct "Build 21620.6760".
I have not checked the problem with Winaero Tweaker disabled because it seems unlikely to be
affecting it (where have I heard that before ...), and the update/reboot/update-symbols scenario
isn't readily reproducible.

Please uninstall Winaero Tweaker and try again. Do not assume it is not causing it. Reboot after.

Then check using the console in explorer patcher. Open up the properties application for explorer patcher, go to advanced, and click on enable console. Then copy and paste the output here.

Something has changed, because at the next boot (a few days later) after the symbol download attempt for the bogus "26100.6760" failed, there was an EP popup announcing the symbol download for the correct 26120.6760 (with Winaero Tweaker still enabled). I'm pretty sure it succeeded, but I didn't capture any output because it caught me off guard.

So after another boot I enabled the console (BTW, it was blank until I clicked on "Restart Explorer Patcher"), and it contains:

[Symbols] Attempting to download symbols for OS version 10.0.26120.6760.

Complete console contents is in the attachment: ep.txt

So it looks like I'll have to wait for another Cumulative Update. This time I'll try to capture everything.

I think you didn't have symbols downloaded. That's why the start menu failed to open.

Now that symbols are downloaded, does the start menu open now?

Executive Summary: Unless you want to pursue this now, I suggest we wait until another occurrence.

This seems to be getting even more unreproducible. There are also some unrelated Windoze bugs (e.g., Win-S search is broken -- characters echo but it won't search, either by Return or clicking the icon). So it may be best to wait until it happens (or doesn't) on a non-"Insider" machine. That's no problem for me, for despite the symbols download failures, everything I want to work in EP seems to work just fine.

I uninstalled Winaero Tweaker (after saving and resetting (undoing) all tweaks), and enabled network connection on startup (I had been doing it manually, to get a bit of control over Windoze updates).
Still a blank console to start with. Contents after "Restart Explorer Patcher" are attached: ep2.txt
(BTW, the title bar of the console had been something like "Windows.Explorer.Console" -- dot-separated. But this time it's "C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe". I suspect that's from resetting Winaero Tweaker.)

The console contents look like the symbol download failed (and doing a 'diff' (under a real OS) shows little difference from the previous run).
Also, C:\Users\bruce\AppData\Roaming\ExplorerPatcher\ is empty, and its last-modified time is May 29, 2025 (as shown under Cygwin). (But Windoze seems to be lax sometimes in updating directory times.)
