I am also thinking of the valadoc.org situation, where the domain is still owned, but nobody is there to manage it anymore, and we are stuck with the ip adress of an old small server. Can there be multiple people having "acess rights" to the domain?

Yes it's possible to share access to the domain, preventing issues with it expiring if one person suddenly becomes inactive for a long time: https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/192/46/how-do-i-share-access-to-my-domain-with-other-users/
