best practice to work around "can't evaluate field chezmoi in type string"

I have this trimPrefix (print $dir .chezmoi.pathSeparator) in a file in .chezmoitemplates.
Im getting executing "dot_config_ignore" at <.chezmoi.pathSeparator>: can't evaluate field chezmoi in type string upon including it in .chezmoiignore.
How do i best work around this?

Can you share the full template(s)?

My initial thought is that you may not be providing the pipeline (likely . in this case) when you call the template:

{{ template "some_template" . }}

But it's tough to say for sure without more info.

Your trimPrefix also does not work as written because it requires 2 arguments.

I'd like to replace "/" with .chezmoi.pathSeparator to be more universal.

Are you using this template in any other files?

.chezmoiignore entries are matched against the target path, not the source path. It's also fine to use forward slash path separators in .chezmoiignore as far as I am aware. The only platform that uses backslash path separators that comes to mind is Windows, which I use on a daily basis, and my .chezmoiignore uses paths with forward slashes.

This looks like a classic example of the XY problem.

.chezmoiignore files always use the forward slash as a separator, work on all operating systems (including Windows), are templates, and always use the target path. If you're filtering on exact_ or private_ or .tmpl in your .chezmoiignore file then you are doing something the wrong way.
