Allow pdf and image conversions to low resolution and smaller size files

Problem Statement

Many official websites (like passport.gov etc) limit the size of pdf and image files when uploaded to their website. Users cannot upload the pdf or image file greater than the file size limit and have to convert the pdf or image to a lower size.

Proposed Solution

1. Allow transmute to convert pdf to pdf file with smaller file size
2. Allow transmute to convert image to image file (same format) with smaller file size

Hey @kalyanmulampaka thanks for submitting this issue - this relates to a broader feature set I have been considering for general "compression" through Transmute, likely through a seperate tab / flow than the conversion page. It would include images, pdfs, videos, audio, etc. without the change in file format.

This is a horizontal expansion of the feature set (more features rather than improving existing features) so I had previously paused on it while I worked to make the existing features more reliable / robust.

I will take a look and see when I could get this implemented!

Hi! I'd be interested in contributing to this feature.

Rather than tackling the full compression workflow (images, PDFs, videos, audio) in a single implementation, would it make sense to start with image compression as the first supported compression operation?

My thought is to support same-format image compression, for example:

• JPEG → JPEG (smaller file size)
• PNG → PNG (optimized/compressed)
• WebP → WebP (smaller file size)

with configurable compression levels, while designing it in a way that could later be extended into a more general compression workflow for PDFs, videos, audio, and other file types.

If that aligns with the direction you have in mind, I'd be happy to explore the existing converter architecture and put together a proposal before starting implementation.

Hey @Wasee-Ur-Rehman I appreciate the enthusiasm but this is something I have already started working on, its quite the undertaking.

Once the initial compressor architecture is in place I will open this up for contributors to add new compressors themselves, but there is a lot to do before I am comfortable letting first time contributors work on these 👍

That makes sense. I'll keep an eye on the compression roadmap and would be happy to help once the architecture is in place and contributor-friendly tasks become available.

In the meantime, I'll look through the repository for other areas where I can contribute.
