Containerd Integration

I have asked this question many times in the containerlab too. But why the containerlab is not supporting the containerd as CRI?

Instead of doing the image pull in node, save, load operation mess, that can run directly with the Node's CRI without needing docker.

Last time, I asked, containerlab team don't have any plan to support containerd. Can you explain what is the requirements to support the containerd? I can help to integrate them.

you can try building containerlab with containerd runtime support (you can use the commit where I still had it - srl-labs/containerlab#1527) and see if that makes any difference for c9s use case.

I think even if clab had support for containerd as a runtime, it won't help to get the images to the runner pods, but feel free to experiment

What is the reason of dropping support for the containerd? Do you remember exact reason? I am asking to not to repeat same think in future.

I will play with it to change to contianerd directly inside the c9s. I am seeing potential improvements in the image handling, and runtime performance increase.

no one needed it. clab users do not use containerd nor of course CRI. It was dead code

Thank you, I will start to do the experiments, and let you know.

I am going to use directly in my fork with the snapshot features. I also fixed some of the bugs. I will contribute them one by one after the experiments finalized successfully.
