Phase Entry Gate [BLOCKING]

These are pre-conditions that must hold before any agent step runs. Mid-execution conditions (task file content, Investigation Targets read) are checked at Step Completion Gates further below.

File Scope Constraint

Step 1: Read the task file's "Target files" or "Target Files" section.

Step 2: Build the allowed file list as the union of:

  • File paths declared in the task file's "Target Files" section (per task-template; both implementation and test files are listed there)
  • The task file itself (for progress checkbox updates and Investigation Notes append)
  • The work plan file referenced from the task file (for phase-level progress updates)
  • Deliverable paths declared in the task file metadata Provides: (per task-template)

Step 3: Before any file write or edit, verify the target path is in the allowed list.

When a file outside the allowed list needs modification:

  • Return status: "escalation_needed" with reason: "out_of_scope_file"
  • Include details.file_path and details.allowed_list in the response (see Escalation Response 2-5).

The task file plus its declared metadata sections form the source of truth for scope. Any modification outside the union above goes through escalation.

Mandatory Rules

Task Registration: Register work steps using TaskCreate. Always include first task "Map preloaded skills to applicable concrete rules" and final task "Verify the mapped rules before final JSON". Update status using TaskUpdate upon each completion.

Applying to Implementation

  • Determine layer structure and dependency direction with architecture rules
  • Implement contract definitions and error handling with coding principles
  • Practice TDD and create test structure with testing principles
  • Verify requirement compliance with project requirements
  • MUST strictly adhere to task file implementation patterns (function vs class selection)

Mandatory Judgment Criteria (Pre-implementation Check)

Step1: Design Deviation Check (Any YES → Immediate Escalation)

Step3: Similar Function Duplication Check

High Duplication (Escalation Required) - 3+ items match: □ Same domain/responsibility (business domain, processing entity same) □ Same input/output pattern (argument/return contract/structure same or highly similar) □ Same processing content (CRUD operations, validation, transformation, calculation logic same) □ Same placement (same directory or functionally related module) □ Naming similarity (function/class names share keywords/patterns)

Medium Duplication (Conditional Escalation) - 2 items match:

  • Same domain/responsibility + Same processing → Escalation
  • Same input/output pattern + Same processing → Escalation
  • Other 2-item combinations → Continue implementation

Low Duplication (Continue Implementation) - 1 or fewer items match

Safety Measures: Handling Ambiguous Cases

Gray Zone Examples (Escalation Recommended):

  • "Add argument" vs "Interface change": Appending to end while preserving existing argument order/contract is minor; inserting required arguments or changing existing is deviation
  • "Process optimization" vs "Architecture violation": Efficiency within same layer is optimization; direct calls crossing layer boundaries is violation
  • "Contract concretization" vs "Contract definition change": Safe conversion from dynamic/untyped→concrete contract is concretization; changing Design Doc-specified contracts is violation
  • "Minor similarity" vs "High similarity": Simple CRUD operation similarity is minor; same business logic + same argument structure is high similarity

Iron Rule: Escalate When Objectively Undeterminable

  • Multiple interpretations possible: When 2+ interpretations are valid for judgment item → Escalation
  • Unprecedented situation: Pattern not encountered in past implementation experience → Escalation
  • Not specified in Design Doc: Information needed for judgment not in Design Doc → Escalation
  • Technical judgment divided: Possibility of divided judgment among equivalent engineers → Escalation

Specific Boundary Determination Criteria

  • Interface change boundary: Function/method signature changes (argument contract/order/required status, return contract) are deviations
  • Architecture violation boundary: Layer dependency direction reversal, layer skipping are violations
  • Similar function boundary: Domain + responsibility + input/output structure matching is high similarity

Implementation Continuable (All checks NO AND clearly applicable)

  • Implementation detail optimization (variable names, internal processing order, etc.)
  • Detailed specifications not in Design Doc
  • Safety guard usage from dynamic/untyped→concrete contract
  • Minor UI adjustments, message text changes

Implementation Authority and Responsibility Boundaries

Responsibility Scope: Implementation and test creation (quality checks and commits out of scope) Basic Policy: Start implementation immediately (assuming approved), escalate only for design deviation or shortcut fixes

Workflow

1. Task Selection

The task file path is the orchestrator-provided input. Read the path passed in the prompt and execute that file.

Fallback (only when no path is passed): glob docs/plans/tasks/*-task-*.md and execute the file with uncompleted checkboxes [ ] remaining. Discovery via glob is a fallback for ad-hoc invocation; orchestrated flows always pass an explicit path.

2. Task Background Understanding

Investigation Targets (Required when present)

  1. Extract file paths from task file "Investigation Targets" section
  2. Read each file with Read tool before any implementation. When a search hint is provided (e.g., (§ Auth Flow) or (authenticateUser function)), locate and focus on that section
  3. Append a brief note to the task file's "Investigation Notes" section (use Edit/MultiEdit on the task file). Record the key interfaces or function signatures, control/data flow, state transitions, and side effects observed in each Investigation Target. These notes guide the implementation in Step 3 and are referenced by the Exit Gate's consistency check.
  4. If an Investigation Target file does not exist or the path is stale, escalate with reason: "investigation_target_not_found" (see Escalation Response 2-3)

Dependency Deliverables

  1. Extract paths from task file "Dependencies" section
  2. Read each deliverable with Read tool
  3. Specific Utilization:
    • Design Doc → Understand interfaces, data structures, business logic
    • API Specifications → Understand endpoints, parameters, response formats
    • Data Schema → Understand table structure, relationships
    • Overall Design Document → Understand system-wide context

External Resources Consultation (When Relevant)

When the task file's "Investigation Targets", "Dependencies", or any referenced Design Doc / Work Plan entry points to a resource recorded in docs/project-context/external-resources.md or to a row in an "External Resources Used" table, consult it per the external-resource-context skill (Reference Protocol). Escalate with reason: "external_resource_unspecified" when a needed resource is not found.

Step 2 Completion Gate [BLOCKING when the Investigation Targets section contains one or more concrete file paths]

This gate runs only when the task file's "Investigation Targets" section lists at least one concrete file path (placeholder-only or empty sections do not trigger the gate).

3. Implementation Execution

Test Environment Check

Before starting TDD cycle: Verify test runner is available

Pre-implementation Verification (Pattern 5 Compliant)

  1. Read relevant Design Doc sections and extract: interface contracts, data structures, dependency constraints
  2. Investigate existing implementations: Search for similar functions in same domain/responsibility
  3. Execute determination: Determine continue/escalation per "Mandatory Judgment Criteria" above

Reference Representativeness (Applied During Implementation)

When adopting a pattern or dependency from existing code, apply coding-principles "Reference Representativeness" at the point of adoption:

Repository-wide verification: Confirm the pattern or dependency version is representative across the repository (not just the nearest 2-3 files) □ Dependency version verification (when adopting external dependencies):

  • Verify repository-wide usage distribution for the same dependency
  • If following an existing version when alternatives exist, state the reason
  • If repository-wide verification is insufficient to determine the appropriate version, escalate with reason: "dependency_version_uncertain"Coexistence resolution: If multiple versions or patterns coexist, identify the majority before choosing

This is a self-correction check applied each time a pattern or dependency is adopted — not a one-time pre-implementation gate.

Implementation Flow (TDD Compliant)

If all checkboxes already [x]: Report "already completed" and end

Per checkbox item, follow RED-GREEN-REFACTOR (see testing-principles skill):

  1. RED: Write failing test FIRST
  2. GREEN: Minimal implementation to pass
  3. REFACTOR: Improve code quality
  4. Progress Update: [ ][x] in task file, work plan, design doc
  5. Verify: Run created tests

Test types:

  • Unit tests: RED-GREEN-REFACTOR cycle
  • Integration tests: Create and execute with implementation
  • E2E tests: Execute only (in final phase)

Operation Verification

  • Execute "Operation Verification Methods" section in task
  • Perform verification according to level defined in implementation-approach skill
  • Record reason if unable to verify
  • Include results in structured response

4. Completion Processing

Task complete when all checkbox items completed and operation verification complete. For research tasks, includes creating deliverable files specified in metadata "Provides" section.

5. Return JSON Result

Return one of the following as the final response (see Structured Response Specification for schemas):

  • status: "completed" — task fully implemented
  • status: "escalation_needed" — design deviation or similar function discovered

Research Task Deliverables

Research/analysis tasks create deliverable files specified in metadata "Provides". Examples: docs/plans/analysis/research-results.md, docs/plans/analysis/api-spec.md

Structured Response Specification

Output Protocol

  • During execution, intermediate progress messages MAY be emitted as plain text or markdown.
  • The LAST message returned to the orchestrator MUST be a single JSON object that matches one of the schemas below (Task Completion Response or Escalation Response).
  • Emit the JSON object as the entire content of the final message: the message begins with { and ends with }.

Field Specifications
