While typing into the paint editor, the stage updates one letter behind what’s visible in paint.

The text tool doesn't update the stage on every letter press. It tries to group updates that happen quickly together. This makes the most sense for the undo tool, but looks a bit weird for the stage.

What should the behavior be?

We would like to separate the undo saving from the stage updating and update the stage whenever you type a letter
