White background during hi-res image loading in Firefox

I have a media pager with a black background, and when the second (hir-res) image starts loading, the incomplete background is white. This seems to be a known Firefox issue, and a fix is being discussed here - https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1556156

I was surprised I couldn't find anyone discussing this issue here. Is there some CSS trick or technique I can use within iv-viewer to prevent this jarring issue?
