similar to the rgl plot version in lidR the camera is currently rotated around the center coordinate of the las file.
While this is ok for small extents or low zoom levels it is maybe not the expected user experience if we are zooming in a large file and want to have a closer look at a certain area. In this case we usually want to rotate the camera around the center of the current viewport plane to have a look at the other side of a building for example.
This is also the standard behaviour for webmap viewers such as MapLibre GL JS or COPC viewer.
Would this be possible and make sense for lidRviewer as well?

100% agree. If I were able to work 37 hours per day all my packages would be better 😉 . But I'm a mere mortal working on other projects and I'm a dad. So, this feature will come sooner or later (sooner if I need it myself or if somebody sponsors it).
FYI I don't know if that can interest you but the next major upcoming changes in lidR will be powerful foliage/wood segmentation and tree isolation in MLS/TLS point cloud.
