Looking at settings, I see

Privacy and legal
This theme is sensitive. Making changes will not indicate if you were nearby explicitly.

  • When making changes to OpenStreetMap, roughly indicate how far away you were from the changed objects. This helps other contributors to understand how you made the change [disabled icon]
  • Save the visited thematic maps and sync them via openstreetmap.org. OpenStreetMap and all apps you use can see this history
  • Save the locations you search for and inspect and sync them via openstreetmap.org. OpenStreetMap and all apps you use can see this history

I find this very surprising and not ok. Given basic principles, and the privacy statement, I expect that when I look at something there might be an API fetch of it, but I do not expect any kind of history to leave the device. I can see why someone might want to enable this, but I don't think it's ok to be on by default. I certainly did not understand this from reading the privacy statement.

But, I disabled "write user prefs" when authorizing, following the Principle of Least Privilege, and it seems that avoids the writes succeeding.
