Running Homebrew as root is extremely dangerous and no longer supported.
As Homebrew does not drop privileges on installation you would be giving all
build scripts full access to your system.

It seems like Homebrew is being run as root, which Homebrew no longer supports.
This can happen if you are using sudo brew or running from a root shell.

Are you perhaps running sudo brew install php instead? If not it could be that the files or folders have wrong permissions.

Try these checks for debugging. If they are indeed permissions errors you should chown the Homebrew directory.

whoami
which brew
brew --prefix
brew doctor

Jordi,Thanks so much for this help!I was able to get it to install - but was unable to connect it in so my local host server could process php. Maybe because I run that in the System directory - not just inside my user account? I need to learn much more about this I guess. In the mean time I got node.js working to do what I needed php to do at the moment.
