Docker container-based simulation fails to run

Following the docker getting started steps and attempting to run the simulation, the error which seems to cause the program to crash is:

[Err] [SDFFeatures.cc:843] The geometry element of collision [collision] couldn't be created

This was after doing these steps:

$ ./run.bash mbari/mbari_wec:latest

(in container)
vvv
$ . setup.bash

$ ./run_simulation.bash

From your logs, it looks like it couldn't launch the GUI and crashed. Are you attempting to run this from an ssh or remote desktop session?

My setup is running the docker container directly on my Ubuntu 20.04 laptop (x86). I followed the docker container's installation steps, including the nvidia driver steps since I have an nvidia gpu installed.

it seems to be having trouble connecting to your :1 display

on your host machine, what is the output of

$ nvidia-smi

also,

$ sudo apt update && sudo apt install mesa-utils
$ glxinfo | grep "OpenGL"

and then repeat these things inside the docker container

I pushed an update on the main branch to fix some nvidia docker issues. Any luck with this? The updates might help your issue.

Hi,
I have also run into issues getting the simulation to run, including some of the same errors.

I am running in a docker container directly on my Apple Intel running Sonoma. I followed the tutorial, using the existing image on DockerHub and running the no-nvidia version. I ended up getting to step 3 and used docker desktop to open a new window.

Then I ran
. setup.bash
with no issues

but when I tried:
./run_simulation.bash

I was left with errors that are in the following file. Useful to note is I tried running the command twice back to back and got 2 diffferent results, both shown in the file, the first of which was the same set of errors gorbkeller had.

Hi @alexje76 , Sorry for the issues! We haven't really tried it on mac yet, but I can offer some potential fixes.

The key issue is this first bit here:

[gz sim-1] qt.qpa.xcb: could not connect to display

This usually happens as a result of trying to connect to an X11/OpenGL capable display, and it cannot find one, then gz sim crashes. You can try something like XQuartz on Mac, though I haven't tried it. From some searching, I found this article that may be helpful configuring things on your Mac:

You may also need to take a look at the docker run arguments in mbari_wec/docker/run.bash to make sure they work on Mac.

Please, let me know if you have any luck with this. I'll try to get my hands on a Mac here and update when I get it running.
