2026 Community Update
When I think about 2025, one word comes to mind – experiment. That's because Hey API is an experiment, both from a product and a business perspective. And 2026 will be the year this experiment gets put to the test. Can this open-source work become sustainable? We will find out in next year's update! In the meantime, read on to learn how things are going with Hey API.
Contributors
A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to Hey API last year! In alphabetical order, I want to give a special shout-out to the following people for their contributions:
Platform
Yes, there now exists a Hey API Platform. You can use it to host your specs, automate code generation in CI, and upvote features you're interested in. It's free to use!
Stable Release
While most of the goals I set out to accomplish this year have been achieved, one question remains: where's v1?
The answer is that I've decided to continue using the initial development version.
This versioning strategy is successfully used by other popular projects like FastAPI and React Native. More importantly, it fits the current state and nature of the project. That said, I expect breaking changes to become less frequent, as most of the foundations have now been laid.
Roadmap
The objective for this year is simple: close the spec-driven loop. This translates to releasing the highly requested MSW and Faker plugins. After that, the sky's the limit!
There are other plugins in various stages of progress; most notably, the SWR plugin is the closest to being ready. It's difficult to predict and commit to an exact roadmap beyond these features, so more announcements will be made once they're ready.
Community
Every now and then, I'm asked about creating a Discord server. I don't plan to create one. GitHub Discussions don't require a new account and are publicly searchable. Please use Discussions for questions, feedback, and conversation.
Financials
I know some of you are curious about the numbers, so let's take a look. To date, Hey API has been 100% funded by me and sponsors, and has operated at cash-neutral, meaning all income was reinvested.
There are no plans to raise venture capital at this time, but there are plans to continue writing good software. If you rely on Hey API in production, consider becoming a sponsor.
Support
Beyond the obvious financial support, you can help Hey API in the following ways:
And most importantly, use our software. If you like it, share your experiences with friends and online.
See you next year!
Bonus
I've been having too much fun creating these songs no one asked for.
