Seeking out CF representation at Space Weather discussion

Hi there,

Edmund Henley from the Space Weather department at the UK Met Office has reached out to me to ask for a CF expert to join a discussion he is hosting at the IHDEA (International Heliophysics Data Environment Alliance) DASH (Data, Analysis, and Software in Heliophysics) Meeting https://dash2025.space.swri.edu/. The request is for someone to do a 5 minute presentation on CF (we might have slides we have done at other conferences) and just to be there for the hour and a half to answer any questions on CF and aid the discussion. "In short it will look at existing space weather standards, trying to look at suitability of existing space approaches (e.g. SPASE, HAPI) largely coming from research contexts, for operations – where at least some of us want to also consider compatibility with terrestrial approaches (e.g. WMO, CF)." I unfortunately cannot do this date so I'm looking for help.

The meeting is 24th October 2:10-3:40pm UTC (9:10-10:40 CDT) in San Antonio, TX but I believe remote attendance is fine. I unfortunately cannot do this date so I'm looking for help. Full abstract below:

IHDEA - Special Session 1: Space Weather Standards: compatibility between research and operations

The research community has made good progress on developing standards for heliophysics and space weather domains, with some level of uptake by operational space weather actors (see Masson+ 2024).
However, ongoing coordination between research and operational actors remains important, as it may not always be possible for operational actors to adopt research-developed architecture or standards, especially where there are drivers to maintain compatibility with terrestrial weather (e.g. using WMO's WIS2 to share space weather observations, or providing space weather services to aviation under ICAO).Given operational space weather is underpinned by the research community, it is important to manage the tensions, and strive for mutual compatibility. Not least given the coupled nature of the Sun-Earth system - having a “standardsopause” at the ionosphere is unhelpful, and fragmented standards impede us from emulating terrestrial's rich tooling ecosystem with cross-sphere compatibility, which has underpinned the quiet revolution in terrestrial forecast skill. This session will explore areas important to consider, around standards for data discovery, standards for data transport, and standards for data use.

Hi Fran @feggleton and Sadie @sadielbartholomew - I have worked with space weather data and standards a bit over the years, so I'd be interested in listening in on this session if possible and being a second CF person in the room.

Big thanks to @ethanrd for reviewing presentation & exceedingly useful feedback (notably ensuring I badged standard_name as an attribute, and not equating it with variable name - helping make point this could enable opt-in/roll-out on older datasets). Also for fielding several questions re CF from audience - makes me hopeful there will be more conversations in future!
