Transform operations

Hi!

I have had a lot of fun trying out trustfall. My potential use case is getting diagnostic information out of a scientific control system with many moving parts. I am using python.

As far as I can tell, there is currently only one transform operation in trustfall: "count". I wonder if it would be possible to add more e.g. "max/min", "sum", "average" etc?

It's definitely possible to add more transform operators, and I have an initial draft PR in this direction: #617. Unfortunately, I don't have a concrete timeline to offer for it — it needs more polish, and it's very important to me that this be done well (without bugs, with good performance, etc.). Just as many other OSS maintainers, I also find myself with lots of projects that would benefit from my attention, and limited time in which to do the work.

If your use case is of a commercial nature, I'd be happy to offer a commercial support contract and reprioritize development toward features useful for the use case. Funding is a strong source of signal that a project is creating value, and is ultimately what makes projects like this viable and sustainable in the long run. This would be a win-win!

Oh, that MR looks interesting, transforms on properties could be very useful! I probably don't have much to add on the implementation as I'm quite new to rust. But I would be happy to try it out. Do you think it is in a usable state and possible to compile with the python bindings?

I understand your stance on quality, I am very impressed with the standard of the code. However I'm afraid there's not much commercial potential in my project, I work at a university :)

I think it only has a minimum implementation with only one or so property transformations implemented. So I doubt it'd be at all useful in practice. It's theoretically possible to compile with Python, I think?

If your university or research group is open to funding the project, I'd be thrilled to figure out how to set that up :)
