Opportunity Summary – NIH/NHGRI Clinical Data Ecosystem for Genomics (CDEG)

Overview

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) at NIH intends to release a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) in December 2025 to support the development of a Clinical Data Ecosystem for Genomics (CDEG). This initiative will fund cooperative agreements to build and pilot a network that demonstrates best practices for integrating, sharing, and using structured genomic data across healthcare systems.

  • Opportunity Number: FOR-HG-26-005
  • Mechanism: U01 Cooperative Agreement
  • Estimated Post Date: December 1, 2025
  • Application Due Date: March 2, 2026
  • Estimated Award Date: October 30, 2026
  • Estimated Project Start: October 30, 2026
  • Expected Awards: TBD
  • Total Program Funding: TBD

Research Scope

The CDEG initiative will fund projects that:

  1. Pilot a clinical genomic data ecosystem – demonstrate structured genomic data (GSD) sharing across diverse healthcare settings, including primary care.
  2. Develop standardized APIs – enable interoperability and access to genomic data across labs, providers, and patients.
  3. Build open-source clinical software and databases – leverage APIs to advance accessibility and reuse of genomic data.
  4. Test portability of genomic data – ensure patient data follows individuals across healthcare systems without barriers.
  5. Produce implementation resources – refine pilot ecosystem practices into scalable models for broad adoption.

Key focus areas:

  • Computational genomics and biomedical data science.
  • Electronic health record (EHR) integration and interoperability.
  • Genomic data standards and cloud-based platforms.
  • Open-source databases and software development.
  • Clinical genomics implementation science.
  • Health information exchange across care settings.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants include:

  • Higher education institutions (public and private).
  • Nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status.
  • For-profit organizations (small and large businesses).
  • Tribal governments and organizations.
  • State, county, and local governments.
  • Public housing and independent school districts.

No cost-sharing requirement.

Key Dates

  • Forecasted Post Date: December 1, 2025
  • Application Deadline: March 2, 2026
  • Anticipated Award Date: October 30, 2026
  • Start Date: October 30, 2026

Strategic Fit for NumFOCUS

  • Strong alignment with NumFOCUS-supported open-source data infrastructure projects that can enable genomic data interoperability and analysis.
  • Relevant projects include:
    • Zarr – scalable storage for large multidimensional genomic datasets.
    • pandas, NumPy, SciPy – core data manipulation and statistical frameworks for genomic pipelines.
    • ITK – image analysis tools adaptable to genomics and clinical biomarkers.
    • MDAnalysis – molecular simulation analysis relevant for translational bioinformatics.
  • Opportunity to position NumFOCUS projects as backbone infrastructure for APIs, cloud-enabled workflows, and EHR-integrated genomic applications.
  • Opens pathways for partnerships between open-source developers, health systems, and clinical genomics researchers in scaling reproducible, accessible genomics software.
