Offline BGC

At the recent ACCESS Community Workshop the need for offline BGC was identified.

This was particularly the case for more complicated versions of WOMBAT, for use with higher resolutions and for long spin-ups to equilibrate carbon pools and for paleo climate modelling.

In theory it shouldn't be too difficult to create a driver for offline mode to read in saved ocean tracer fields to drive the BGC model.

Has this been done for any of the other BGC models?

Thanks for opening an issue on this @aidanheerdegen.

With regard to other BGC models, the answer is yes. The NEMO-PISCES community have been doing this for many years. I'm unsure why at MOM they haven't pushed this forward, but I have a meeting with Charlie Stock this week to see if he has his own set up for BGC model development at GFDL. He and John Dunne and others there may well have their own personal set-ups.

With regard to the required fields, in addition to the Temperature and Salinity tracers you would also need transports through the faces of the grid cells.

Tracers in Ocean Paradigm” (TOP) is the passive tracers engine of the NEMO ocean model (“Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean”). It is intended to be a flexible tool for studying the on/offline oceanic tracers transport and the biogeochemical processes (“green ocean”), as well as its interactions with the other components of the Earth climate system over a wide range of space and time scales. TOP is interfaced with the NEMO ocean engine, and, via the OASIS coupler, with several atmospheric general circulation models.

Seems there is some support for this in MOM6 already:
