The driver has worked for a long time. Generally there's little work to do in order to use it. You'll just have to compile the driver against your running kernel in order to be able to load the driver into that kernel.

If you're using a kernel version greater than 6.12 you may need some of the changes in the outstanding pull request.

If by "What problems remain to be resolved", you mean "when will this be added to the Linux source code", then the answer is probably never.

In order to compile the driver, clone the repo, then look at the makefile and run the appropriate targets using make, ie make test or make clean.

You'll have to have the kernel source installed. There will be a kernel-source package or something similar in your distros repos.

I am a bit of a rookie when it comes to building source. How can I get started just git pull and try to build it per your instructions?

So you'll need a few requirements like make, GCC and kernel-source or kernel-headers. There could be others but I can't think at the moment. But I'm sure you could find that info fairly easily in a "how to build external/out-of-tree kernel modules" tutorial or blog post. The exact package names my differ slightly depending on your Linux distribution.

Clone the repo: git clone https://github.com/mmm444/eie-pro-linux.git

cd eie-pro-linux

Add the below to the Makefile below the 'default' target

install: default
	$(MAKE) -C $(KERNELDIR) M=$(PWD) modules_install
	depmod -a

Then as a standard user:
make

Then as elevated user:
sudo make install

Then:
sudo modprobe eie_pro

At this point the module should be loaded and available to be used. Go check your Audio devices in your desktops setting app.

FYI, I just use this device for listening, but I do have issues, which mean I have to reset the device and sometimes remove the driver from the kernel when the device is off, then turn it back on. If you are wanting to use this for Audio Studio work, I'm not sure how it will work out for you. But give it a try, maybe it's just my hardware/system with an issue.

You may also need to edit /etc/modprobe.{conf,d/} to set which sound modules are loaded and in what order etc.

If you reboot and the module isn't picked up you may need to add an entry to /etc/modules-load.d/

Also if you do a system update and your kernel version is updated, you then have to recompile the module again with the new kernel, so just the same process as above, make, sudo make install, sudo modprobe eie_pro.

Thanks so much for all the information. I want to use it with REW to plot room acoustics and as room DSP EQ. I will start trying to install it. I setup a dedicated Ubuntu 25 workstation for it.

It looks like your running Linux kernel 6.14. Now things get a bit tricker, I ran into issues with 6.12 and I've raised a PR with some changes/fixes, but they've not been merged into this repo yet.

You could try installing an older kernel (before 6.12) if there's one available in your distro. This would probably be the easiest thing todo.

Otherwise you can try checking out the changes for post 6.12 from my fork of this repo: https://github.com/MatTaylorSharrow/eie-pro-linux . This is the source of the PR I mentioned above.

ok, try cloning my repo then git clone https://github.com/MatTaylorSharrow/eie-pro-linux.git and then retry the steps above. Just don't try cloning in the current directory, cd ..

You won't need to edit the Makefile to add the 'install' lines as they already exist in my repo. So, you should be able to do make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe eie_pro
