gsm shield not working

hi am new to gsm shield, i bought the arduino uno R3 and placed the shield on 
it and just connected it to the pc nothing more

when i do the testmodem it tells me error, modem isnt answering
and for the baudtest it gives no reading its like the shield isnt really 
connected
some guys says that u need apower supply to your shield to work 

i dont know whats the problem and if its in the power how can i pass it to the 
shield while it is placed on the arduino
