Griffe 2.0, packaging

PyPI is now serving version 2.0 of griffe, which seems to break basic imports of the library. I looked for a changelog documenting this and couldn't find any mention of version 2.0. Is this an official release?

So yeah some deprecated stuff was removed from the public API, is that what you meant?

I think I'm hitting the same problem. It seems like the griffe package is empty (?), i.e. if you download the wheel from https://pypi.org/project/griffe/2.0.0/#files and do a

wheel unpack griffe-2.0.0-py3-none-any.whl

there's no source code in there? Am I missing something?

It's now a meta-distribution: it has no source code and depends on both griffelib and griffecli. The former contains the griffe package, the latter adds the two check and dump CLI entrypoints.

I had a custom package for archlinux (that just installed the griffe wheel).. which might explain the confusion 🤦 That all makes sense! Thanks for explaining and sorry for the noise (assuming this isn't the same issue as the OP).

@alexfikl no worries! I suppose re-packagers (for Linux distros and else) will have to update their builds indeed. If any re-packager stumbles through here, let me know if you have any issue packaging Griffe 2! I'll do my best to help 🙂

In case any other distro packager notices this bug, I'll share some notes so hopefully they don't waste 3 hours on this:

• dunamai is pretty clean and unproblematic, and just needs one test skipped.
• uv-dynamic-versioning has test suite that only works in a git repository, but a dummy git repository with a dummy commit suffices.
• griffe has no sdist, so you need to take the GitHub archive, build packages/griffelib, packages/griffecli and then top-level package.
• uv-dynamic-versioning refuses to run without a git repository, but doesn't use it, so a dummy repo suffices.
• the calls to pdm-backend do not respect PDM_BUILD_SCM_VERSION, so you need to create a dummy repository with a 2.0.0 tag to get the correct version.
