How to update postgres data base from 14 to 15?

I used docker-compose to run miniflux. In earlier versions, postgres was v.14.

After I updated it recently, now I get following errors:

The data directory was initialized by PostgreSQL version 14, which is not compatible with this version 15.4

I am wondering how to migrate it inside docker.

Same problem for me after upgrading with docker this morning to the latest version:

PostgreSQL Database directory appears to contain a database; Skipping initialization
2023-09-16 06:01:23.630 UTC [1] FATAL: database files are incompatible with server
2023-09-16 06:01:23.630 UTC [1] DETAIL: The data directory was initialized by PostgreSQL version 15, which is not compatible with this version 16.0 (Debian 16.0-1.pgdg120+1).

As short term fix do not use 'latest' tag for postgres.
I now went for 'image: postgres:15.4-bullseye', but still the migration to the newest postgres version needs to be addressed.

This is what I do to upgrade my PostgreSQL container to a new major version :

1. docker compose down
2. docker compose up -d db
3. docker compose exec -it db pg_dumpall -U miniflux > data.sql
4. docker compose down
5. Create a new data directory :
   • mv database database.bak
   • mkdir database
6. Update the tag you are using in docker-compose.yml (postgres:15 → postgres:16)
7. docker compose up -d db
8. docker compose exec -T db psql -U miniflux < data.sql
9. docker compose up -d
10. Check that everything is working
11. rm -rf database.bak
12. rm -rf data.sql
